Choice of Methods in
Teaching

Deductive
Method
of
Teaching

Deductive Method
Deductive methods involve presenting grammar
rules first, followed by examples and practice.
This approach encourages students to apply
logic to understand the rules. It is a structured
and systematic way of teaching grammar.
More of Teacher Centered Learning.

Example:
The teacher writes simple sentences
to explain the rules of the past and present
tenses. After this, they hand out
worksheets wherein students are asked to
convert past tense to present tense and
vice versa.

Advantages of Deductive
Approach:
Deductive methods provide clarity
and organization in grammar
instruction.
Students develop critical thinking
skills and gain a deeper
understanding of grammar rules.
This approach sets a strong
foundation for language proficiency.

Disdvantages of Deductive
Approach:
Students may not have sufficient
metalanguage(such as grammar terminlogy).
Teacher-fronted,transmition-style
classroom(there is no student interaction or
involvement).
Explanation is generally NOT effective as
demonstration.
Students may believe (wrongly) that learning
a language means learning rules.

Inductive
Method
of
Teaching

Inductive Method
The focus is on the learners and the use. The use of
language is over rules.
The inductive approach is a more modern style of
teaching where the new grammatical structures or
rules are presented to the students in a real language
context (Goner, Phillips, and Walters 135)
The students learn the use of the structure
through practice of the language in context, and
later realize the rules from the practical examples.

Example:
The teacher gives a text and then asks the
learners to identify verbs and then wants them
to group the verbs according to different usage
of verb forms in simple present tense, such as
play and plays. Then the learners are asked to
identify how these verbs are used. The teacher
monitors and guides. Group of learners then
work with one category each to analyse
structure, meaning and use, and finally present
their findings to the class.

Advantages of Inductive
Approach:
Promotes Critical Thinking
Engages Student Participation
Learning Is Long Term

Disdvantages of Inductive
Approach:
Can Create Inequality
Takes Time
Topic Is Complex

Interactive
Method
of
Teaching

Interactive Method
Introduce grammar concepts through educational
games and activities. Create interactive quizzes,
grammar bingo, or grammar jeopardy to make learning
grammar a playful experience. Incorporate friendly
competitions, rewards, and incentives to encourage
active participation and friendly rivalry among
students.
Interactive teaching strategies is a pattern of
communicational strategies which promote active
student involvement in the learning process

Example:
Ask students to present a grammar
lesson with plenty of examples and develop
an exercise for the rest of the students to
complete as a group.

Advantages of Interactive
Approach:
Engaging Content
Provides Flexible Learning
Saving Time and Cost
Teachers Making Use of
Interactive Learning Tools
Adaptable Lesson Plans
Fun and Enjoyment for Children

Disdvantages of Interactive
Approach:
Limited class time
A possible increase in prepartion
time.
A potential difficulty of using active
learning in large classes.
Lack of needed
materials,equipment,or resources.
