ORIGIN (HISTORY) Originally, this site had a Visigoth Church In 784 AD, Abd al-Rahman built a mosque here. After the Reconquista in 1236, this mosque was transformed into catholic cathedral. They didn’t destroy the mosque instead added Christian elements to it.
COLOUMNS & ARCHES Video Credits: More than walk Famous forest of coloumns (over 850 of them) Red and white arches (A classic feature of Islamic art) Some of these columns were actually reused from Roman and Visigoth buildings.
MIHRAB (PRAYING AREA) Built like a little octagonal room The golden mosaics and the Arabic inscriptions decorating it. These mosaics were made by artists sent from Byzantium, which shows how important this mosque was.
COURTYARD OF ORANGES The Patio de los Naranjos , or Orange Tree Courtyard, gives a peaceful place to rest and enjoy the scent of fresh oranges. Originally, it was used by Muslims to perform ablutions . Later, during the Christian period, it was expanded and transformed, but the tradition of planting orange trees remained.
ISLAMIC INFLUENCE The Mezquita is a perfect example of Islamic influence in Spain. Its design inspired many other buildings in Andalusia. You can see similar arches and columns in places like the Alhambra in Granada, Alcazar etc.
FUN FACTS There are over 850 columns, some more than a thousand years old. The Mezquita was once the largest mosque outside of Mecca. When Córdoba was the capital of the Caliphate, the mosque could hold up to 40,000 worshippers at once. Emperor Charles V , who approved the cathedral inside, later regretted it and said: “You have destroyed something unique to build something ordinary.”
