Outline Definitions Types Criteria of good materials Kurikulum Merdeka Adapting materials Making changes to Content
Definitions Materials are “anything which can be used to facilitate the learning of a language, including coursebooks, videos, graded readers, flash cards, games, websites and mobile phone interactions” (Tomlinson, 2012, p. 143). Text is a segment of spoken or written language that can be used for language teaching (Richards & Schmidt, 2010). Task is an activity which is designed to help achieve a particular learning goal (Richards & Schmidt, 2010).

Criteria of Good Materials Bao (2016)
Kurikulum Merdeka 3 main characteristics: project-based learning for the development of soft skills and character according to the Profil Pelajar Pancasila; Focus on essential materials so that there is sufficient time for literacy and numeracy; Flexibility for teachers to carry out differentiated learning according to student abilities.
Differentiating Content & Process “Content is the "input" of teaching and learning. It's what we teach and what we want students to learn. There are two ways to think about differentiating content: (1) as adapting what we teach or want students to learn or (2) as adapting how we give students access to what we teach or want them to learn .” “In the language of school, "process" is often spoken of as an activity.” Tomlinson (2017)
Adapting Materials Richards (2014)
Making Changes to Content & Process (based on Differentiated Instruction principles) Based on Students’ Readiness Multilevel Materials for Multilevel Learners ( Nuangpolmak , 2014) Example 1: https://s.id/Nuangpolmak2014

Based on Students’ Learning Styles e.g. A poem beginning, “I’m an old, old lady” Each student chooses a task, sits down near its card and then decides whether to work individually, in a pair or in a group. The students can change tasks at any time and can do another one if they finish early. Later any student who wants to can “perform” their task to the class (e.g. show their painting, answer questions about the poem, explain the story behind the poem). Visual Kinesthetic Auditory Paint a picture of the poem. You are the old lady. Read or write a letter to your son in Australia. You are related to the old lady. Form a family group with other ‘relatives’ and discuss how to help the old lady. Every day in summer the old lady sits on a bench in the park. Today there is an old man sitting there. Listen to the conversation between the old woman and the old man. Tomlinson and Masuhara (2018)
Based on Students’ Interest Examples: Tomlinson (2013), “Or the materials can be based on units of text genres (e.g. advertisements, reports, jokes, announcements stories etc.) and the learners can be asked to find an appropriate and engaging text from the internet” (p. 111) as in the example Tomlinson provides for a set of activities to be used with any newspaper report (pp. 111–114). “The target classes were similar to each other in being composed of future “leaders” in politics, sport, entertainment, business, etc., but in each class the learners differed considerably from each other. We catered for these differences by offering choice of different versions of the same text, of task, and of amount within each unit of material and trialed the materials,” (Tomlinson and Masuhara (2018, p. 299).
