This presentation on Micro-Modular Curriculum Design introduces an innovative approach to structuring educational programs by utilizing smaller, flexible units called nano- and micro-modules. These modules are designed to be stackable, allowing for the creation of larger courses or programs that can adapt to the learner's pace and professional needs. The concept of micro-modularity facilitates personalized learning pathways, enabling students to earn certificates, credentials, or even degrees by completing specific learning outcomes that are aligned with industry demands.
The presentation outlines various achievement types, from individual competencies to full degree programs, illustrating how micro-modules can contribute to different levels of certification. It emphasizes the importance of a visual design system that ensures consistency across all learning experiences, making them accessible, engaging, and measurable. Key elements include learning experience design, assessment strategies, learning analytics, and technology integration, which all contribute to creating a flexible yet rigorous framework for student success.
By implementing this micro-modular approach, institutions can offer learners a more adaptable and responsive education that caters to evolving job market requirements, supports lifelong learning, and promotes continuous professional development. This design supports non-degree offerings as well, providing a pathway for professionals to upskill through targeted, stackable learning experiences.

18 December 2020 | 2 Types of Achievements Achievement Type Definition Competency A skill or collection of skills that an individual must know and be able to do at a determined level to perform a specific task, job role or function. Course A set of competencies stacked as a course. Courses may be credit or non-credit bearing. Certificate A credential issued by an institution in recognition of the completion of curricula that usually represents requisite mastery of the knowledge and skills of an occupation, profession, or academic program. Certificates may be Title IV eligible or ineligible. Title IV eligible certificate programs must be at least one academic year in duration (24 CUs) and may consist of multiple nano- and micro-credentials. Title IV ineligible certificates may vary in size (though are less than one academic year in duration) but should always have value in the market. Certificates may be credit or non-credit bearing. Certification A time-limited, renewable non-degree credential awarded by an authoritative body to an individual or organization for demonstrating the designated knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform a specific job. Degree A credential conferred by a college, university, or other postsecondary institution as official recognition for the successful completion of a program of study.
