MICROTEACHING

INTRODUCTION Micro-teaching is a teacher training and faculty development technique whereby the teacher reviews a recording of a teaching session, in order to get constructive feedback from peers or students about what has worked and what improvements can be made to their teaching technique. Micro-teaching was invented in 1963 at Stanford university by Dwight W. Allen .

DEFINITION Microteaching as a scaled-down teaching encounter in class size and class time. The number of students is from 5-10 and the duration of period ranges from 5-20 minutes. - Allen

Objectives To enable the teacher –trainees to learn and assimilate new teaching skills under controlled conditions. To enable the teacher – trainee to gain confidence in teaching and mastering a number of teaching skills on a small group of pupils. To utilize the academic potential of teacher trainee for providing much needed feedback.

Cont.. To give the teacher- trainees training in the component skills of teaching at the pre- service level. To gain maximum, advantage with little time, money and material.

Principles of Microteaching ENFORCEMENT PRACTICE CONTINUITY SUPERVISION

Characteristics of Microteaching Microelement: Microteaching reduces the complexity of the teaching situations in the terms of: Number of students to be taught. Duration of lesson. Subject matter to be taught to enable the trainee to Concentrate on a particular teaching skill at a time. One should master the components of the task of teaching before he attempts to perform effectively the complicated task of teaching at macro-level.

Teaching skills and teaching strategies Pre- instructional skills Instructional skills Post – instructional skills

Pre-instructional skills Sequencing and organizing knowledge to be presented in order to achieve specific objectives Appropriate content Proper organization Selection of proper audio-visuals aids.

Instructional skills Skills of introducing a lesson. Skills of explaining and illustrating. Reinforcement. Probing questions Reinforcing Pupil participation. Diagnosing Pupils difficulties.

Post-instructional skills Interpreting pupil's performance in a test. It enables the trainees to develop these skills and perfect them in such a way as to master the teaching strategies.

MICROTEACHING CYCLE

Strategy of Microteaching Supervisor has to conduct orientation training for teacher trainees on each teaching skill by model presentation followed with discussion about the Presentation. Supervisor has to prepare time-schedule of micro lesson for each teacher trainee. Delivery of lesson under controlled conditions by Pupil-teacher.

Cont.. Supervision of the lesson by the supervisor. Video tapes of the lesson to be televised at closed circuit television. Discussion about the presentation/feedback from pupil supervisor and supervisor incharge . Preparation of the lesson after the feedback.

Cont.. Reteaching of the same lesson to another small group of the students by the pupil teacher. Again discussion with the supervisor and feedback.

Five Rs of Microteaching

ADVANTAGES Accomplishment of a specific task Expansion of the knowledge Helps in solving problem Effective in teaching behavior Helps in developing important teaching skills Provide many opportunities .

Steps in Microteaching Defining the skill: A particular skill is defined to student teachers in terms. of specific teaching behaviours, and the objectives such behaviours aim at achieving. Demonstrating the lesson: The teacher educator can give a demonstration lesson using the particular skill. Planning the lesson: The student teacher prepares the lesson plans based on the pre decided model on a suitable topic relating to the particular skill which he proposes to practice.

Cont.. Teaching the micro-lesson. Discussion on the lesson delivered Replanning the lesson Reteaching the lesson Rediscussion or refeedback Repeating the cycle.

CONCLUSION Micro-teaching is a teacher training and faculty development technique whereby the teacher reviews a recording of a teaching session, in order to get constructive feedback from peer and or students about what has worked and what improvements can be made to their teaching technique. In the original process, a teacher was asked to prepare a short lesson for a small group of learners who may not have been his/her own students.

A cross-sectional study to evaluate teaching skills of postgraduate medical students using component skill approach in microteaching Swati R Deshpande et al. J Educ Health Promot . 2020. Objectives: The objectives of this study were to determine the pattern of teaching skills and to evaluate the components of teaching skills of microteaching in PG students. Materials and methods : It was a retrospective record-based study done over a period of 1 month. Microteaching assessment records of 34 PG students of the department of community medicine were analyzed. Results: Teaching skills including setting induction during the class, lesson planning, presentation, and use of audio-visual aids were found to be satisfactory. Students lacked the skills of interaction and summarization of the topic.
