EVOLUTION OF TRADITIONAL TO
NEW MEDIA
LESSON 2
Identify if it is Media Literacy, Information
Literacy, or Technology Literacy.
The RMS Titanic sank on April 15, 1912, in the
North Atlantic Ocean. It was the largest ocean
liner in service at the time and was four days
into its maiden voyage from Southampton to
New York City. The Titanic struck an iceberg
at around 11:40 PM on April 14, and the ship
sank a few hours later, with an estimated
2,224 people on board.
How did news
about the
Titanic spread
at that time?
The telegraph is a
communication system that
transmits messages over long
distances using coded signals,
typically Morse code.
Developed in the 19th century,
it revolutionized long-distance
communication by allowing
rapid transmission of
information across continents.
Smoke signals are a form
of communication that
uses the visual signals of
smoke to convey
messages over distances.
This method was used by
various cultures,
particularly Indigenous
peoples of the Americas,
to send messages or
alerts.
WHAT IF THE SINKING OF THE
TITANIC HAPPENED WITHIN
OUR GENERATION?
How will the news will spread?
During the People Power Revolution in the
Philippines (1986), radio was a crucial medium
used to gather people. The most notable was
Radio Veritas, which broadcasted updates,
mobilized supporters, and coordinated the
massive, non-violent protests.
