Definition “Minerals are the essential elements present in nature and believed to be important for human body” It includes calcium, phosphorus, potassium, sulfur, sodium, chloride, magnesium, plus many others required in tiny amount for our body such as iron and iodine. 8/14/2021 Gulfreen College of Nursing 3
Functions of minerals Inorganic element needed by the body for the following functions: Build tissues. Regulate body fluids. Assist in body functions. Help form body structures. 8/14/2021 Gulfreen College of Nursing 4
Classification of minerals Minerals are classified as Macro minerals (Major) and Micro minerals. 1. Major minerals: These are required in amounts greater than 100mg a day, sometimes called “ macro minerals”. 2. Trace minerals: These are required in the diet in amounts lesser than 100mg a day - sometimes called “ micro minerals”. 8/14/2021 Gulfreen College of Nursing 5
How minerals change to ions? Ions: Ions are electrically charged atoms resulting from chemical reaction. Ions are divides into anions and cations . A nions are negatively charged and cations are positively charged. Mineral salts dissolve in water thus break into separate ions known as electrolytes in such a condition. 8/14/2021 Gulfreen College of Nursing 6
