LESSON OBJECTIVES At the end of the lesson, the students should be able to: 1 . Identify the modal verbs of prohibition used in the sentences; 2. Actively participate in class discussion and activity; and 3. Write statements expressing prohibition using can’t and mustn’t.

MODALS - are helping verbs that denote intention or feeling of the speaker. They are used to express permission, prohibition, and obligation.

Modal + verb (base form) Examples : Can go Have to wear Must say Must look

MODAL VERBS OF PROHIBITION - this modal is used to express an act of prohibiting or not allowing something especially by an authority.

Can’t ( cannot ) Can’t usually gives the idea of something that is against the rules. EXAMPLES: People can’t go outside without wearing their facemask. Motorists can’t drive without their driver’s license.

You can’t go into the hotel wearing slippers. You can’t drive in this country unless you are eighteen.

Mustn’t Mustn’t usually means that it is the speaker who is setting the rule . EXAMPLES: You mustn’t sleep late.

You mustn’t use your cell phone during class hours. Medical practitioners mustn’t make mistakes. You mustn’t use your phone in class.

QUIZ Identify whether the sentence is an example of prohibition. Write PROHIBITION if it is an example of prohibition and NOT PROHIBITION if not.

1. You can’t sing inside the library. 2. You mustn’t skip your meals. 3. Rose must not use her phone while eating.

4. That story can’t be true. 5. She can’t go to school wearing a short skirt. 6. I can’t sing high notes . 7. We must not throw our garbage everywhere.

8. Rex can’t swim in a 6-feet deep swimming pool. 9. You can’t eat junk food. 10. I must go to school tomorrow.

ASSIGNMENT Compose 10 sentences about the things that you are not allowed to do. Use the correct modal verbs in every sentence. Write it in a whole sheet of paper.
