Maslow’s Hierarchy of needs Maslow also saw personality development as a natural progression from lower to higher levels a basic hierarchy of needs. As newborns, we focus on physiological needs like hunger and thirst, and then as we grow and develop, we move on through four higher levels.

Knowing yourself

Abraham Maslow American psychologist Abraham Maslow wrote in his 1943 paper, A Theory of Human Motivation , that people have needs to be fulfilled, some bigger and some are smaller in priority compared to one another. Maslow arranged these needs into the pyramid

Johari’s Window A Johari window is a psychological tool created by Joseph Luft and Harry Ingham in 1955. It’s a simple and useful tool for understanding and training: self-awareness Personal development Improving communications Interpersonal relationships Group dynamics Team development; and Inter group relationships

Johari’s Window

The Johari window as a tool does have its drawbacks: Some things are perhaps better not communicated with others. People may pass on the information they received further than you desire or use it in a negative way. Some people or cultures have a very open and accepting approach to feedback and some do not. People can take personal feedback offensively so it’s important when facilitating to exercise caution and start gradually.

THE TEMPERAMENTS

Hippocrates Known as the “Father of Medicine” Developed the Theory of Four Humors. He hypothesized that four major bodily fluids (black bile, yellow bile, blood, and phlegm) affected people’s health and personalities.

The temperaments Sanguine (Blood) - personality type is described primarily as being highly talkative, enthusiastic, active, and social. Choleric (Yellow Bile) - individuals tend to be more extroverted. They are described as independent, decisive, goal-oriented, and ambitious. These combined with their dominant, result-oriented outlook make them natural leaders. In Greek, Medieval, and Renaissance thought, they were also violent, vengeful, and short-tempered.

The temperaments Melancholic (Black Bile) - They are introverted and try to avoid being singled out in a crowd. A melancholic personality leads to self-reliant individuals who are thoughtful, reserved, and often anxious. Phlegmatic (Phlegm) - individuals tend to be relaxed, peaceful, quiet, deep thinkers and easy-going. They are sympathetic and care about others, yet they try to hide their emotions.
