The Process of Communication The communication process involves communicating parties sharing information, ideas and emotions with others. There are some elements which are associated with this process.

THE ELEMENTS OF COMMUNICATION Message Sender Medium Channel Receiver Feedback

THE ELEMENTS OF COMMUNICATION Sender- is an individual, group, or organization who initiates the communication. This source is initially responsible for the success of the message.

THE ELEMENTS OF COMMUNICATION Medium- the form the sender chooses to put the message into. Eg : letter, email, speech

THE ELEMENTS OF COMMUNICATION Channel – the way the sender chooses to send the message. E.g. post, internet, radio, post office

THE ELEMENTS OF COMMUNICATION Receiver- is the individual or individuals to whom the message is directed.

THE ELEMENTS OF COMMUNICATION Feedback-After receiving a message, the receiver responds in some way and signals that response to the sender.

ACTIVITY Create an annotated diagram on your large blank sheets which displays the elements of the communication process.

FORMS OF COMMUNICATION

Forms of Communication There are two main forms of communication: Verbal and Non-Verbal ROCHFORD PAGES-107-110

Verbal refers to anything which involves using words to communicate. Verbal communication can be oral or written. Non-verbal communication is the transferal of communication without the use of words.

BARRIERS TO COMMUNICATION

What is a barrier? Often during communicative events there is some sort of interference or blockage to interaction. These are commonly referred to as barriers to communication and may be internal or external in nature.

Internal barriers include: daydreaming, anxiety and hunger, headache, depression. External barriers include: noise from a lawn mower, gestures, attire, posture, chatting, spilled beverage on a page and choice of words.

Facilitators to Communication Facilitators to communication are any things/ methods used to eliminate or reduce the barriers to communication. E.g. microphone, speaker, projector, interpreters etc.

THE CONTEXT OF COMMUNICATION Communication does not take place in a vacuum. Between communicators, the process takes place in a particular communication situation where the identifiable elements of the process are interrelated. This situation is referred to as the context —the when and where of a communication event. Communication contexts vary depending on the need, purpose, number of communicators and the ways exchange is taking place.
