1 DODOMA REGIONAL REFERRAL HOSPITAL SINGIDA COLLEGE OF HEALTH SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY FIELD STUDENTS PRESENTATION TOPIC: MICROSCOPE
Presentation outline Basic parts of the microscope Components of the microscope Identify materials used in correct care and maintenance of the microscope; Maintenance and repair of microscope . The do‘s and don’ts’ when caring of a microscope Tool used for record keeping of maintenance of microscope . 2
THE PRIMARY TOOL : THE MICROSCOPE Compound Microscope Teaching Microscope fitted with a Monitor Teaching microscope for Multiple Observers 3
PRIMARY TOOL : THE MICROSCOPE Teaching microscope for Multiple Observers 4
COMPONENTS OF THE MICROSCOPE Support System Magnification System Illumination System Adjustment System It consists of the base, arm, and stage. The base and arm are structural elements which hold the other parts of the microscope in place while the stage holds the slide It is an optical compound microscope: Eyepiece Lenses and Objective Lenses: It consists of a light source, such as an electric lamp or a light-emitting diode, and a lens system forming the condenser. It is the focusing parts which consists of two knobs - the coarse adjustment knob and the fine adjustment knob. 5
COMPONENTS OF THE MICROSCOPE Support System Base: Must rest on a firm, flat bench or table Supports the main tube and the mechanical stage Arm: Holds the slide secure and allows the specimen moved smoothly backwards, forwards and sideways Mechanical Stage: 6
COMPONENTS OF THE MICROSCOPE Magnification System Holds the objective lenses of different magnification Revolving Nosepie c e: x4 , x 1 ,x 4 0, x 1 f or magnification of th e image Objectives: x10 for magnification of image Eyepiece: 7
COMPONENTS OF THE MICROSCOPE Ill u m i n a tion System Main Tube Body Tube (Prism) c)Sub-stage Condenser Made up of number of lenses Centers the light from the mirror or electric light source to central spot on microscopic field Can be raised or lowered to give maximum/minimum illumination 8
COMPONENTS OF THE MICROSCOPE Ill u m i n a tion System Iris diaphragm – controls the amount of light passing through the condenser Light source – use to direct light from light source to the microscopic field 9
COMPONENTS OF THE MICROSCOPE Adjustment System Used to focus the specimen being examined Coarse Ad j ustment: Used f or fin e r f ocus i ng Fine Ad j ustment: 10
Materials for care and Cleaning: S o ft cotton cloth and le n s cleans i ng t i s s ue Special tissue paper or whole absorbent paper 7 % Alcohol Make-up brush (softest) / camel hairbrush soft cloth Plastic c o v er CARE AND MAINTENANCE 11
CARE AND MAINTENANCE The eyepieces: Clean upper lens with a lens cleaning tissue Clean lower lens with a fine brush The condenser Clean the same way as the objectives using a soft cloth The support and stage Clean using soft brush 12
CARE AND MAINTENANCE: (STORAGE OF A MICROSCOPE) Laboratories with electricity: A warm cupboard heated by 1 or 2 light bulbs (40 W) Laboratories without electricity: A desiccator 15-20 cm in diameter with no less than 250 g of dry blue silica gel (which indicates humidity by turning pink) * * Impo r ta n t: The mi c r os co pes m ust be k ept i n the warm cupbo a r d e v en i f the laborato r y i s air co n d iti o ned 13
