PREFACE

oral Values, are qualities that direct the children towards an ethical way of life, Values help
to shape a person's character. They are a natural sources of child spiritual growth. Earlier,
children imbibed values in familial and societal systems. Over time the living patterns have
changed and resulted in the need of values tobe integrated with the school curriculum.
Our series, Moral Values aims to form the groundwork and build a reservoir of values that
the child can draw on for strength and sustenance. The books are structured 10 work
towards an education which instills an appreciative and healthy relationship with the self
and all that is around including the family, school, country, environment and cultural
heritage.
Exercise at the end of every chapter is indeed a step ahead process to test the childs self
understanding. Value Education is not, an end in itself I is, in essence, a process which
cannot limit itself to the confines of a classroom. Parents, teachers and other forces work
together to guide the child towards the right path. Because
Every child is ike a flower
Love is what he showers.
He removes hatred,
He is very sacred,
He doesn’t know what isin,
He never does any sin
He brings the distant people together.
He is a gift of God.
He is innocent.

He isa blessing.
He shouldn't be cursed,
He should only be loved.
So, this series is an attempt to equip the child to form his own attitude towards li
ones: believe thatthe education which prepares such a child is truly Value Education.
Suggestions, if any, to improve the book are always welcome.

Rohan was a mischievous boy. He loved to tease
others. In the class, Rohan would spill ink on
somebody's notebook, hide the tiffin and water
bottle in lunch break and sometimes even stick
chewing gum on chair seats of his classmates.
Whenever his parents came for parent-teacher
meetings, the teachers would always complain about
Rohan. His parents were very upset with his behaviour
but did not know what to do.

Rohan was very playful and
would run to the, park, in the
evening to play with his
friends. But even in the park,
he couldn’t stay out of trouble.
He wanted everyone else to
play the game he wanted to
play.

On Saturdays and Sundays, he would go over to the homes of his
neighbourhood friends. They would share their toys with him, but when
they came to his house he refused to let them play with his toys.

Rohan's parents always taught him to share his things with others but he
never listened.

One day his parents decided to take him to a poor neighbourhood.
Rohan saw that the people living there did not have proper clothes or
houses. The children did not have toys to play with and many of them
did noteven go to school.

When Rohan came back home, he
was very sad. He looked at his toys
but there was no smile on his face.
After seeing the children in the slum,
he realised how lucky he was. He
said sorry to his parents and promised
to start sharing his things with others.
He also promised not to tease
anyone ever.

Dashrath was the king of Ayodhya. One day
Dashrath came to the forest to hunt. Dashrath was
waiting under a tree near the river when he heard
the gurgling sound. He thought some animal had
come to drink water from the river. He shot
an arrow in the direction of the sound.
There was a cry of a human being.

Dashrath immediately rushed to the spot. He
found that the arrow had hit a young boy.
He was Shravan Kumar who had come to
the river bank to fetch some water for his
blind parents whom he was taking

Before dying, Shravan Kumar told Dashrath that his old blind parents
were thirsty. He requested the king to take the pot of water to them.

Dashrath went to Shravan Kumar's
parents. With tears rolling down his
cheeks, Dashrath told them about their
son's death. He offered to take them
to his palace and look after them.
But they cried for their son. For
them, no one could take the place
of their son.

Shravan Kumar's mother threw the
pot of water to the ground and cursed the
king, “One day, you too shall die when your sons are not around.”

Many years later Dashrath’s sons, Rama and Lakshmana had to go in

out and found that their two mountains
of stuff had been totally mixed up together.
Someone had been there, mixing their things up! After all that time and
effort they had spent to separate everything!

The brothers tried to find who had
done it. Soon they found a pair of
children playing on the other
side of the mountains of stuff.
They were happily playing
together, picking everything
up, careless of whether they
were mixing it alltogether.
They looked really happy,
enjoying themselves to the
max.

Seeing the children so happy, the two grumpy old brothers realised how
foolish they had been for so many years. They had given up playing with
anything, instead spending their whole lives arguing over what was
theirs to play with.
