Zindal Kordan Analysis
Nineteen year old Zindal Kordan stood at the window on the 409th floor of the unfinished Pax
City Capitol Building and surveyed the rebuilding efforts going on far below. Over three weeks
ago, he killed Henry Cavanaugh, the leader of the Naturalist Rebellion that had caused this
bloody civil war Zin had fought in for almost a year now, on this alien planet so far from Earth
where Zindal had grown up, but what he had come to call home. He hoped his actions, as brazen

He tried to call out to Io, tried to beg him for help, but he couldn t. Strings of words wove
themselves together above his head, but refused to make any sense. Someone stripped him;
someone else stuck something to his forehead and chest, arms and legs. A dot of pain in his
hand felt like an IV. Io stepped into view, motionless in the flutter of movements around Zindal.
When Zindal met his eyes, he was surprised to find sorrow there, actual sorrow. He said nothing.
The group of people lifted Zin from the table and lowered him into a narrow container. They
pulled a door over the top of it was it a coffin? Were they burying him alive? Panic burned in his
stomach but light still made its way to his unresponsive eyes. Again, he tried to move, and again,
he failed. Something started to churn beneath him. The temperature dropped until he could see
his breath. A thick, freezing liquid pumped out of the holes in the walls surrounding him. It
inched higher, sending goosebumps down his arms. He was going to drown. The realization
sprung tears from his eyes, and again, he looked for Io. The liquid covered his legs and chest,
inched its way up to his ears, seeped into his mouth and nose. He held his breath for as long as he
