Taylor - summary

Taylor thought that: Managers Manage. Workers Work. (1) Man is a rational economic man concerned with maximising his economic gain;   Getting the best pay. (2) People respond as individuals , not as groups (3) People can be treated in a standardised fashion, like machines. Taylor had a simple view about what motivated people at work - Mon£y . He felt that workers should get a fair day's pay for a fair day's work , and that pay should be linked to the amount produced (e.g. piece-rates . Workers who did not deliver a fair day's work would be paid less (or nothing). Workers who did more than a fair day's work (e.g. exceeded the target) would be paid more. Frederick Taylor Scientific Management . Modern Times 4 minutes

Select the workers to perform the task Observe them performing the task and note the key elements of it Record the time taken to do each task and each part of each task Identify the quickest method of doing the task Train all staff to do the quicker method Supervise staff to make sure that they are doing the work correctly Pay workers on the basis of their results based on the theory of the ‘economic man’ Taylor - Scientific Management – How to improve Productivity

Taylor’s findings revolutionised the efficiency of and productivity of industry and the way that the work is organised. Taylor’s approach was widely introduced by manufacturers in the 20 th century were mass and flow production was being introduced. Workers specialised in one task, there was strict management control and workers were paid for the level of output achieved. Results of Taylor’s work

Motivation Factors What do you let me do at work? Nature of Work Sense of Achievement, Recognition,, Responsibility, Personal Growth and Advancement Frederick Herzberg. Two Factor Theory Hygiene Factors How are your treated at work? Salary, Job Security, Working Conditions, Level and Quality of Supervision, Company Policy and Administration, Interpersonal Relations. Kick In The Arse--- K.I.T.A . JB1 JB2

Hygiene Factors The worker wants to avoid pain/dis-satisfaction A manager can help you avoid pain by a carrot or a stick, a reward or a threat The manager can get you to do something by a : Kick In The Arse. "I can get you to move by positive or negative K.I.T.A . but once you have moved I have to get you to move again, by another K.I.T.A !" Do you now WANT to do something for me? No you are just avoiding dissatisfaction What is meant by a Hygiene Factor? This is something that stops you from being dissatisfied. (Unhappy).

Can't motivate any one to do a good job if they can't do the job! A most powerful motivator is training. The more a person can do the more you motivate them This means you have to give them the opportunity to use that skill. Ways to motivate. (Write this down) Job enrichment.   The opportunity to use their ability on more difficult tasks Job enlargement. The opportunity to do more tasks Job rotation   The opportunity to do more simple tasks Empowerment   Giving you power over your job What is a Motivating Factor?

Good pay and working conditions will help to remove dissatisfaction, but they are not the only factors which will improve motivation. Herzberg felt it was possible to get someone to do a job by paying them – this is called movement. But just because they do the job it doesn’t mean that they want to do the job. Workers require more to be motivated to do the job. Consequences of Herzberg’s Theory in Today’s Business

The motivators must be in place for the workers to be prepared to work hard and to give their best. Herzberg felt that the principles of job enrichment would help to motivate staff. To get the best out a workforce the motivators should be available to all workers. Consequences of Herzberg’s Theory in Today’s Business.

Workers benefit from; Completing units of work – appreciating the importance of their role in the entire production process Feedback on their performance and being told when they have done a good job A range of tasks – rather than performing the same repetitive task have a range of tasks can provide variety and motivation for staff Higher pay, improve working conditions and less supervision – can also help to motivate staff and prevent staff from feeling as though they are being taken for granted. Consequences of Herzberg’s Theory in Business

While other theorists may disagree with some of Herzberg’s conclusions, his work has had significant impact on business practices. Team working is much more widespread with work being delegated to teams. Workers tend to be much more responsible for the quality of their work. Workers are also more satisfied working together with less supervision. A lot of businesses now look at ways of improving 2 way communication including encouraging opinions and feedback from staff – this can also help to motivate staff. Evaluating Herzberg’s work

Herzberg - summary

Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs

… … … … … Advantages of Maslow’s work

Not everyone has the same needs as identified in the hierarchy In reality it can be very difficult to identify the degree to which each need has been met and which level each worker is on Money may be used to satisfy a physical need, but may also pay for satisfaction of other levels as well Self-actualisation is never really permanently achieved – jobs therefore should continually offer challenges and opportunities to keep staff motivated Disadvantages of Maslow’s work

The theories provide a starting point for analysing and discussing motivational issues. The research done by the theorists could be criticised for its lack of rigour and follow up, they could be said to only have covered the basic issues. How useful are motivational theories?

Are you able to; Explain the importance of motivating a workforce Describe some financial and non-financial methods of rewarding staff Analyse the different approaches by key Motivational Theorists, including; F. Taylor F. Herzberg and A. Maslow Can you apply these theories in a case study in your exam? Have we met our objectives?
