Motivation vs. Discipline
By Lesedi Mahlaela

The difference between
Motivation and
Discipline?
Motivation is “Why to Do”
Motivation is the why behind the
goal. It’s your little engine that says
you can, when the rest of you says
you can’t.
Discipline is “What to Do”
Self-discipline is simply correcting
or regulating your behaviour for
the sake of improvement.

How to capitalize on
the concept of
Discipline vs.
Motivation
1.Understanding Motivation:
➢Motivationis real but often temporary: It can provide
a burst of enthusiasm to start something new.
➢Motivation can be triggered by external factors,
emotions, or goals.
2. Recognizing the Limitations of Motivation:
➢Relying solely on motivation is not sustainable: It can
fade away, making it challenging to stay consistent.
➢Waiting for motivation to strike may lead to
procrastination and missed opportunities.

Continues…
3. Embracing Discipline:
➢Discipline is the key to long-term success: It
enables consistent progress even when
motivation wanes.
4. Building Habits:
➢Establishing daily routines and habits helps create
a disciplined approach to tasks.

Continues…
5. Setting Clear Goals:
➢Clearly define your objectives and break
them down into achievable steps.
6. Creating a Schedule:
➢Develop a structured schedule to
allocate time for tasks and avoid
distractions.

Continues…
7. Accountability and Support:
➢Share your goals with others or find an
accountability partner.
8. Celebrate Progress:
➢Acknowledge and celebrate small
achievements to stay motivated.
➢Positive reinforcement encourages continued
discipline.

Examples from my own experience
Motivation Examples:
➢I like watching motivational videos from my favorite
actor called Denzel Washington to keep myself
motivatedespecially in my academics.
➢I like rewarding myself by buying myself sweet stuff or
going out with friends to celebrate my small victories.
Discipline Examples:
➢I follow my class timetable every week consistently to
keep on track with my lecturer in class, even on days
when I feel less motivated.
➢I set aside time each day to work on my chess passion
to improve my ratings by either watching Gotham
chess Youtubechannel or practicing, even during
challenging times.

Conclusion
➢Motivation is not a myth,butit's unreliable for
consistent progress.
➢Motivationis like aspark, while discipline is the
fuelthat keeps the fire burning.
➢Discipline is driven by intrinsic motivation and
supported by habits and structure, is the key to
reaching one's true potential.
➢Both play essential roles in reaching one's true
potential, but it is discipline that sustains
progress over the long haul.
The greatest glory in living lies not in never falling, but in rising every time we fall. -Nelson Mandela
