NAAC – NATIONAL ASSESSMENT AND ACCREDITATION COUNCIL

NAAC (1994) The National Assessment and Accreditation Council is an autonomous body established by the University Grand Commission (UGC) of India to assess and accredit institutions of higher education in the country . It is an outcome of the recommendation of the National Policy on Education (NPE)

To ensure the satisfactory level of quality in higher education, they permits the formation of institutions of higher education with fancy programs of standard facilities and standard . To address the issue of deterioration in quality , the NPE(1986) and Plan of Action (POA - 1992) that spelt out the strategic plan for the policies, advocated the establishment of an independent national accreditation body NAAC in 1994 with its headquarter at Bangalore

The NAAC functions through its General Council (GC ) and Executive committee (EC) where educational administrators, policy makers and senior academicians from a cross section of higher education are represented. The chairperson of the UGC, is the president of the GC of the NAAC; the chairperson of the EC is an academic and administrative head, and is the member secretary of both the GC and EC.

The NAAC also has many advisory and consultative committee to guide its practices, in addition to the statutory bodies that steer its policies. The NAAC has a core staff and consultants to support it’s activities . It also receives assistant from a large number of external resources persons from across the country who are not full time staff of NAAC.

AIMS OF NAAC To assess and accredit instructions of higher education in the country . Contribution to National Development . Fostering global competencies among students . Inculcating a value system in students . Promoting the use of technology . Quest for excellence.

GRADING Grade Point A++ 3.76 - 4 A+ 3.51 – 3.75 A 3.01 – 3.50 B++ 2.76 – 3.00 B+ 2.51 – 2.76 B 2.01 – 2.50 C 1.51 – 2.00 D less than 1.51

CRITERIAS OF GRADING Promotion of research . Resource mobilization for research . Research facility . Research publications and awards. Extension activities . Instructional social responsibility . Consultancy.

FUNCTIONS Device and establish mechanism for periodic assessment and accreditation of instructions of higher learning . Assess the quality of institutions of higher education that volunteer for the process through an internationally accepted methodology. Accredit instructions of higher learning , universities, colleges, centers of excellence etc.. & specific academic programmes .

Set rating parameter & criteria for certifying and grading higher educational instructions and educational programmes . Develop an information database in higher education to keep abreast with the latest development in the area of higher education particularly in the area of assessment and accreditation . Recommend norms to be followed for quality improvement in teaching and research in higher education .
