Components of NSTP Civic Welfare Training Service (CWTS) – emphasizes community immersion and hands-on involvement in various community-based initiatives. This involvement creates empathy, cultural awareness, and a sincere desire to improve the lives of less fortunate people.
Components of NSTP Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) – discusses a greater awareness of global dynamics, multidisciplinary skills, and strategic decision-making. In addition to military prowess, this component strongly emphasizes a heightened sense of civic duty.

Definition of Literacy Literacy – comes from the Latin word, Littera , meaning letters. Literacy is the ability to comprehend those letters either through reading or writing. It comprises the reading, writing, and numeracy competencies of students.
Definition of Literacy According to the National Statistics Office, there are two kinds of literacy: basic and functional . Basic literacy – means the ability to read and write a simple message. Functional literacy – refers to the ability to solve problems, to be creative and critical and to maximize one’s potential to the very best of their abilities.

Literacy in Today’s World UNESCO stands for United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization. It is an international organization of several countries working together to create a better world by promoting peace, eliminating poverty and sustainable development.
Literacy in Today’s World Literacy is the ability to identify, understand, interpret, create, communicate and compute, using printed and written materials associated with varying contexts. (Montoya, 2018)
DIGITAL LITERACY – is a must as everyone uses smartphones and apps alongside it. FINANCIAL LITERACY – pertains to the ability of the individual to earn, save, invest and manage their own income for their own gains. MEDIA LITERACY – refers to the ability to distinguish reliable information from dubious ones. Under media can also be historical literacy .
CIVIC/SOCIAL LITERACY – relates to your understanding of society in general. In terms of how we understand the different social classes in terms of skin color or even language can help identify one’s identity and place in society for the better. LEGAL LITERACY – refers to understanding of the law, the bill of rights, the constitution and ability to obey them.
Lesson 3: The Significance of Literacy in Society
Education Education is important in every nation. The Philippine Constitution stipulates that the State shall protect and promote the right of all citizens to quality education. Free public education is shouldered by the government.
Education Scholarships, subsidies and loans and other incentives are made available to those in need particularly those underprivileged. The state will also promote the non-formal, informal and indigenous learning systems responding to the needs of the community.
Education As well as to provide adult citizens, the disabled, out-of-school youth with training in civics, vocational efficiency and other skills.
Functional Literacy – is a higher form of literacy involving necessary skills in order to understand and live on a daily basis. One of the skills involved, aside from reading and writing is also numeracy skills. Digital Literacy – means to have an understanding of the use of technology in a fast paced world. Adaptiveness is the key in securing digital literacy.
The more literate individuals, the more they can rise up and maximize their potential. If literate individuals can determine what is factual from what is not, if they can think critically and learn to understand and adapt to their environment then we can promise a safer community and purposeful work in a national and global setting.
