3. What does natural hazard mean? A natural hazard is a physical event that has a potential to cause loss of life or injury and damage property and infrastructure.

4. Time They can be short term events that last just a few minutes or long term events that can happen several years.

5. Classification Natural hazards can be classified in a number of different ways. The most common classification is based on the cause of the hazard, including: Geological hazard example : earthquake and volcanic eruption Climatic hazard example : droughts, tropical cyclone and floods

6. Cont’d Natural hazard can also classified are based on the : Magnitude or intensity of the event Speed at which the event takes place Duration of the event Frequency of the event

7. Natural Disaster A natural disaster is when there is serious disruption to a community caused by a natural hazard, which can involve social, economic and environmental losses or impacts. A natural disaster follows a natural hazard.

8. conditions The conditions to be counted as a disaster by UN: A report of 10 or more people killed A report of 100 or more people affected A state of emergency declared by the government of the affected country A request by the relevant national government for international assistance.

9. Impact The impact of natural disaster on a community will depend on the : Length of time people are exposed to the natural hazard. Vulnerability of people affected People’s ability to cope with the effects.
