Unang batch ng MidEast OFWs pabalik sa PH Christmas parties, caroling banned in Metro Manila HEADLINE PRACTICE ANSWERS

This is where you should establish your angle. The lead is the sister of your headline. The words that are found in your headline should be found in your lead using synonyms. Get straight to the point. Just narrate! Do not describe the event. Remember that you are not in the event personally. You are just reading facts and stories through fact sheets. LEAD

As for the Filipino, there isn’t much variety in lead. The most recommended type of lead is the ‘Verb Lead.’ Example: Papatawan ng parusa ang mga pulis na hindi makaaabot at makapagpapanatili sa Body Mass Index (BMI) na itinakda ng Philippine National Police (PNP) ayon kay PNP Officer-In-Charge Lt. Gen. Archie Gamboa . FILIPINO LEAD

The first paragraph: Most important part of the article, summarizes the story The Hook: arouses the readers interest Answers right away the most important questions: 5W’s and 1H ENGLISH LEAD

Lead Supporting Lead Direct Quotation Indirect Quotation Direct Quoation So on and so forth… BODY STRUCTURE

Most of the time, we are often told to follow the inverted pyramid structure in writing a news article. However, this style is often misinterpreted: It tells us to put all 5Ws and 1H in the lead. -Putting What, Who, and Why is already enough in the lead. WHEN, HOW, and WHERE can be put in the subsequent paragraphs (can be interchanged). BODY STRUCTURE

2. Each paragraph should be important. -Some writers believe that inverted pyramid tells us that the significance of each of the paragraph should decrease as the article reaches the end. - Each of your paragraph should be significant from the beginning until the end. -What it really means is that it should start from very specific to general. -You can end with a backgrounder. BODY STRUCTURE

Editorializing. Keep your opinion out of the story Using first and second person. Keep yourself out of the story. Common error: “our school.” No personal pronouns! Messy handwriting, poor grammar and spelling. Paragraphs too long. Use only one thought or idea per paragraph. New paragraph for each transition and each speaker. Misspelling names. Trying to use all of the information and quotes you have. Be judicious. AVOID!

1 sentence 1 paragraph policy. If you doubt the word that you’re using, especially in the headline, DO NOT use it. Use words that are easy to understand. This is not feature writing. Practice makes your article perfect. If you can shorten your headline, shorten it. Take risks, but be mindful of its consequences. REMEMBER!
