On viral urinal post We don’t tolerate homophobia – SSLG Prexy 1 Quezon National High School Supreme Student Learner Government (QNHS-SSLG) has condemned the homophobic remarks thrown by netizens on a picture posted on SSLG Facebook page showing its officers using the new toilet at the campus. 2 In an interview, SSLG President Zeus Eclavea expressed his dismay at the ‘double meaning’ comments regarding a student wearing a tote bag in the photo.

3 “The QNHS SSLG expresses its denunciation over the issue. We are against the negative remarks thrown by some netizens to our members. We don’t tolerate homophobia,” Eclavea said. 4 In the popular post that garnered many ‘haha’ reactions from netizens, some mocked the male officer for wearing a tote bag saying that it is ‘obvious’ that he is part of the LGBTQIA+ community. 5 “In an educational institution like ours, there must be no room for discrimination and homophobia; in a society like ours, the heteronormative standards of how people should act or wear must be eliminated,” Eclavea stressed.

6 He added that while they see nothing wrong with the said picture, they promise to practice sensitivity when it comes to posting photos online. 7 Meanwhile, the student body deleted the said photo to protect the student in the photo from cyberbullying due to the malicious comments. 8 The said photo published on the SSLG official page last September 23 as part of the documentation for the opening of a new toilet on campus donated by QNHS Batch ‘75 gained more than 7,000 reactions and shares on Facebook.

9 Regarding the issue, QNHS Principal Jessie Vasquez proposed constructing all-gender bathrooms in the campus. 10 “There’s only one thing we can do about that — they should really be given a separate comfort room so they don’t have that kind of reaction,” the principal said. 11 He added that the toilets offered by Batch ‘75, particularly the women’s, men’s, and urinals, will only be replaced with signs. The urinal will be given to men while the men’s will be converted into an all-gender restroom. 12 “We haven’t yet designed a comfort room for all genders. Anyway, I think it is also necessary for LGBT people, particularly for the transgender. We are looking forward to also designing a comfort room for them,” Vasquez pointed out.

13 The said plan gained support from QNHS students, including Kate Cabriga, who shared some points why she is in favor of the establishment of all-gender restrooms inside the campus. 14 “I feel like if we have gender-neutral restrooms na well-managed, mas magiging comfortable ‘yung students in the midst of their transgender journey because they will not be pressured sa restrooms na feeling nila ay hindi sila belong. It’s in having a safe space,” Cabriga highlighted. 15 She also mentioned the importance of spreading awareness on sexual orientation, gender identity and expression (SOGIE), especially inside an educational institution like QNHS.

Let’s process! What is the angle of the story? What type of school news is this article? Is the lead appropriate? Why? Which detail in the story is the most important? the least important? Do all the paragraphs follow one another in logical order, that is, each one blending smoothly with the preceding paragraphs?

Let’s process! 6. If space is not enough, which paragraphs can be deleted? Why? Are the paragraphs short? Is the vocabulary simple, clear, and precise? Are the facts complete and accurate? How are the facts arranged in the story?

Let’s process! 11. What news structure was used in writing this article? 12. Who and what are the sources of information in this article? 13. What methods of news gathering were employed?

NEWS WRITING PRODUCTION

THE ANGLE The main idea of a news story or lead is called the “angle.” It is also referred to as the “hook” because it is used to grab or hook the reader’s attention.

THE ANGLE So how do you choose the angle of your story?

A news story is made or broken by its angle. To choose an angle, we should ask what is the most striking thing about this story? Identify specific angle of an event/issue as highlight of your story (news within a news) Once you find that, the story will write itself.

1. The head should tell the gist of the story simply and accurately. Example: Quezon NHS SPED program gets ₱159K fund from DepED 2. The first letter of the first word and proper nouns are generally capitalized. Example: New PTA officers inducted; Pabelonia bares priority projects underway

3. Use the historical present if the verb is in the active voice. Examples : -Grade 7 teachers undergo MATATAG curriculum training -Reyes tops editorial tilt 4. Omit the helping verb if the verb is in the passive voice. Only the past participle is retained. Wrong: Drug pushers are nabbed Correct: Drug pushers nabbed

5. Use the infinitive for future events. Examples : -City Hall to punish anti-squatting drive -Quezon Province to host Palarong Pambansa in 2025 6 . Avoid the use of articles (a, an the) to begin a headline. Wrong: A fire hits Lucena slum area Correct: Fire hits Lucena slum area

7 . Never use the word “may”. It shows the uncertain element of the story. Example: PH may host 2028 FIBA World Cup 8. Assertions in a headline should have sources. SC in peril says law experts No speaker, no SONA says House Opposition 9. Don’t convert verbs into noun. Wrong: Students urge oustering of the principal. Correct: Students urge to oust the principal. Examples:

10. Use the shorter word whenever possible, e.g. use “cut” for decrease or “hike” for increase. Examples: Gov’t hikes oil prices Gov’t cuts oil subsidy 11. Be specific. Avoid generalities . Wrong: Student wins contest Right: Coco scribe wins nat’l essay writing tilt 12. Avoid label head Wrong: Journalism Workshop Right: The Coconut conducts journalism workshop

13. Do not editorialize your headline. Wrong: The Coconut shows great performance in 2024 DSPC Right: The Coconut wins 6 out of 7 in 2018 DSPC writing contest 14. Do not use the same word twice in the headline or kicker. Example: Gun haul Quezon cops seize 24 guns from suspected bandits

15. To use direct quotation as head, use any of the following forms instead of the traditional quotation marks: a. Using the dash instead of the quotation mark. Example: Sanctity of marriage remains - CBCP

b. Using the colon Example: Briones: PPST is the yardstick of quality c. Using narrative form Example : Teachers need help but not hopeless, says Briones

16.Do not be in the negative. Wrong: Niyogyugan Festival won’t be held Right: Niyogyugan Festival cancelled

17.Have a subject and a verb. Avoid starting with a verb; the headline might sound as if it were giving orders. Wrong: Revise policy on securing admission slips Right: Guidance Office revises policy on securing admission slips

17.Don’t use names unless the person is well-known; use common nouns instead. Wrong: Surquia wins the region’s MOCJ tilt Right: Publication EIC wins the region’s MOCJ tilt

18. Use widely-known abbreviations. Wrong: PBBM visits LC Correct: PBBM visits Lucena City

19. Use comma instead of “and” in writing headlines . Wrong: Teachers and barangay officials revive bayanihan in Brigada Eskwela Correct: Teachers, barangay officials revive bayanihan in Brigada Eskwela

What have you noticed about the number of sentences per paragraph? Are the sentences long or short? How many idea/s is/are discussed? What’s the rule if you have two sentences in one paragraph?
