WORKSHOP ON MODIFYING LEARNING ACTIVITY SHEETS FOCUSING ON NUMERACY SKILLS DEVELOPMENT ARIS B. NISOLA Teacher III Mathematics Cotmon National High School Camalig South
Opening Prayer Almighty Father, you are God of our communities and neighborhoods. Help us to bless our communities as a sign of your love in this world. As we gather here in the harbour of your safety, we thank you for the gifts of fellowship and family.
OBJECTIVES: At the end of this session, LAC members should be able to: discuss concepts and strategies on numeracy skills development and learning. modify learning activity sheets (LAS) focusing on numeracy skills development. demonstrate appreciation of the importance of modifying learning activity sheets focusing on numeracy skills among learners.

NUMERACY SKILLS NEEDING MAJOR SUPPORT Conjecturing and Reasoning Proving and Decision-Making Applying and Connecting
Conjecturing Conjecturing is the skill of formulating mathematical theories that still need to be proven. Conjectures arise when one notices a pattern that holds true for many cases. ? ?
Activities to practice conjecturing Ask the learners to complete a conditional statement “If p then q. ” If…, then the sum of two numbers is even. If the product of two numbers is even, then… If…, then the line L bisects the area of the quadrilateral. ? ?
Reasoning Reasoning is the process of explaining using sound analyses, following the rules of logic. Using puzzles and adding an explanation component can sharpen the learners’ reasoning skills.
Reasoning Example: For this number pyramid, the value of each cell is the sum of the two beneath. Find the missing values in the pyramid below. 4 -7 24
Proving Proving is the skill of demonstrating the truth or falsifying a theory using reasoning and arguments. Teachers should create opportunities for students to understand and appreciate the structure of the proof.
Proving Activities to enhance learners’ proving skills: - mathematical investigations - completing a proof/ rearranging statements and reasons needed for the proof
Decision-making Decision-making is the skill of arriving at a choice or decision based on sound, logical procedures and mathematical analyses.
Decision-making Which method should I use to solve the problem?
Applying and Connecting Applying is the skill of using concepts, procedures, algorithms, and other mathematical constructs in practical situations and phenomena. Connecting is the skill of integrating mathematics with other school subjects and other areas in life.
Applying and Connecting Contextualization of activities and examples is recommended to enhance these skills. Provide extension activities.

MECHANICS: Group yourselves into three groups. Decide on which learning activity sheets will be modified and will be integrated with activities that develop the discussed numeracy skills. Each group is given forty (40) minutes to modify the chosen LAS.
