Q & A with Enza Vita, author of Always Already
Free – Recognizing the natural wakefulness that you
were born with

•Q: I know from other meditation practices I have tried that
my mind is out of control, will the Practice of Presence you
recommend help me with that?
•ENZA: There are three qualities of being that can help cut
involvement with thoughts and emotions:
•Keep your senses wide open, not focused on anything in
particular, but allowing all sensation in.
•Have a loose relaxed attitude about keeping what you have
recognized, simply allowing it; and
•Keep a bright and sharp presence of mind.

•If you feel yourself becoming
rigid and grasping, open up
the senses even further, soften
your gaze and relax more
deeply. Allow more looseness
in, which feels like allowing
space or water into your being
and becoming saturated with
it.

•If you feel yourself becoming
spacey and dull, then sharpen
the mind, straighten up the
body, breathe deeper, and
sharpen your gaze as if trying to
pierce something but without
really focusing on any object.

•The trick is not to focus your attention
on anything, outer or inner, and not to
place your attention on anything in-
between. What this means is a big full
stop.
