FLUOROSIS It’s a public health problem which caused by excess intake of fluoride through drinking water/ food products/ industrial pollutant over a long period. It results in major health disorders - DENTAL FLUOROSIS - SKELETAL FLUOROSIS - NON SKELETAL FLUOROSIS 2
PROBLEM DENTAL FLUOROSIS It affects children and discolours and disfigures the teeth. The teeth could be chalky white and may have with yellow, brown or black spots or streaks on the enamel surfaces SKELETAL FLUOROSIS It affect the bones and major joints of the body like neck, back bone, shoulder, hip joints. Its associated with severe pain, rigidity & stiffness of joints. In severe forms it results into marked disability. 3

PREVALENCE : Fluoride prevalence was reported in 230 districts of 19 states earlier. As per recent data from ministry of drinking water & sanitation, there are 14,132 habitations (as on 01:04:2014) from 19 states which are yet to be provided with safe drinking water. PROGRAMME COVERAGE : NPPCF initiated on 11 th five year plan. Initiated in the year of 2008-09 being expanded in a phased manner. 100 districts & 17 states were covered. Further 11 districts added on 2013-15. Additional 84 new districts to be taken up during 12 th five year plan. 6
GOALS & OBJECTIVES GOAL – The NPPCF aims to prevent and control fluorosis cases in the country. The objectives are as follows To collect, asses & use the baseline survey data of fluorosis from ministry of drinking water and sanitation for starting the project. Comprehensive management of fluorosis in the selected areas. Capacity building for prevention, diagnosis and management of fluorosis cases. 7
STRATEGY Surveillance of fluorosis in the community. Capacity building (Human resource) in the form of training & manpower support. Establishment of diagnosis facilities in the medical hospitals. Management of fluorosis cases including * TREATMENT * SURGERY * REHABILITATION 5. Health education for prevention & control of fluorosis cases. 8
ACTIVITIES 9 Community diagnosis of fluorosis in village/ block/ cluster wise. Facility mapping from prevention, health promotion, diagnostic facilities, reconstructive surgery and medical rehabilitation in village/ block/ cluster wise. Gap analysis in facilities and organisation of physical and financial support for bridging the gaps, as per strategies listed. 1.Diagnosis of cases of fluorosis and managing it. 2.Public health intervention on the basis of community diagnosis. 3.Behavioural change by IEC (information education communication) 4.Training. Assistance provided to states Strengthening manpower in endemic district by providing consultant, laboratory technician, field investigators (3) for 6 months. Purchasing of equipment for laboratory. Training at various level. Health education, treatment (reconstructive surgery & rehabilitation).
