Definition Nutrition; The process of taking in food and using it for growth, metabolism, and repair. Pregnancy; It is the term used to describe the period in which a fetus develops inside a woman's uterus and usually lasts about38- 40 weeks.
Important steps to a healthy pregnancy Eating a balanced diet. Gaining the right amount of weight. Enjoying light regular physical activity. Taking a vitamin and mineral supplement if recommended by a physician.
Nutritional need during pregnancy Protein Fluid Carbohydrate Fat(omega-3 fatty acid) Prenatal vitamins and mineral
Protein Helps with the development of baby organs, muscles, fingers, toes, hair and nails. During pregnancy need 75-100 grams daily .
Fluid Intake is also an important part of pregnancy nutrition. Drinking 8-12 glasses of water a day.
Carbohydrates Carbohydrates are made up of starches, sugars and fiber and are a main source of energy during pregnancy .
Fat (Omega-3 fatty acid) It is essential for brain development and prevents preterm births. It is required for fetal visual development. It reduces the incidence of heart diseases in infants. During pregnancy need 300mg/day.
Prenatal vitamins and minerals Vitamin C Iron Folic acid Zinc Calcium Vitamin D
Vitamin C Help to promote bone and tissue development in growing baby and boost the absorption of iron. During pregnancy need 85 milligrams per day.
Iron Helps ensure that enough oxygen is supplied to both mother and baby. During pregnancy need 27 mg daily .
Folate (Folic Acid) It reduces the risk of neural tube defects (a birth defect of the brain and spinal cord). Must get at least 400 micrograms of folate daily.
Zinc It for the rapid cell growth (DNA replication, cell division and growth).
Calcium Helps to build strong bones and teeth. During pregnancy need 1,000 milligrams (mg) daily
Vitamin D Aids body in the absorption of calcium to help build baby’s bones and teeth. During pregnancy need 600 (IUs) daily .
