Introduction The term objective has been derived from medieval Latin word “ objectum ” which means “ thing presented to the mind ” .
Definition An objective type test is a psychological test that measures an individual’s characteristics independent of rater bias. Objective type test requires a user to choose or to provide a response to a question whose correct answer is predetermined.
Types of objective type tests There are two types of objective type test. Recall type Simple recall type Sentence completion type Fill in the blanks Recognition type MCQs True/false Matching type Classification Analogy type
Merits of objective type tests It is based on objectivity ,No scope of subjectivity There is no need to write in detail. It requires short and specific answer. It is better for knowledge identification. It is better for scoring and aparting comprehensive knowledge. Partiality is impossible, if two students are equal in knowledge then get equal marks.
Cont.. Self satisfaction to students after looking result. Question can be set from whole syllabus. Due to reliable result ,test is said to be scientific. No need for cramming or rote memorization. It is economical in terms of time and money. Examiner & student both cannot bluffed.
Demerits of objective type tests No depth of knowledge due to point to permit study. Chance factor & guessing become a big problem. Cheating factor is a big problem. Imagination & reasoning power also falls down due to limited response. Measurement of higher mental abilities is not possible. New ideas is totally distorted. Capability & talents of students can’t be identified due to mechanical process of students mind.
Concept of Negative Marking Negative marking system is used to reduce the guessing factor in objective type test. By using the given formula, we get the correct score. S=R-W/(K-1) Where S=No. of correct responses W=No. of wrong responses K=No. of options/choices S=R-W/(K-1)
Cont.. For three optional MCQs- S=R-W/2 For four optional MCQs S=R-W/3 For five optional MCQs S=R-W/4
Example: A student attempts a test paper consisting 100 MCQs. All question have four options. The student attempted 92 questions out of which 74 are correct & 18 are wrong. Then calculate his correct score? Solution. Here, R=74 W=18 K=4 S=R-W/(K-1) S=74-18/(4-1) S=74-18/3 S=74-6 S=68 Ans.
Conclusion Every test items have some merits & demerits but objective type tests have less demerits than any other test items. Objective type test items are widely used in modern Indian education system. These tests are free from personal factors of the teachers. These tests are more valid & reliable than any other tests
