Innovation provides hope of a solution where there otherwise may not be any . - Simon Waxman, Against Innovation , 2012 @ rmoejo # OLCInnovate

From Redlining to Digital Redlining Chris Gilliard Professor Macomb Community College @ hypervisible # OLCInnovate

Digital Redlining @ hypervisible “Redlining is the practice of denying or limiting financial services to certain neighborhoods based on racial or ethnic composition without regard to the residents' qualifications or credit worthiness. The term "redlining" refers to the practice of using a red line on a map to delineate the area where financial institutions would not invest.” Fair Housing Center of Greater Boston # OLCInnovate

Digital Redlining “Outlawed decades ago, redlining has re-emerged as a serious concern among regulators as banks have sharply retreated from providing home loans to African-Americans in the wake of the financial crisis .” NY Times, Oct 30, 2015 @ hypervisible # OLCInnovate

Digital Redlining “Just imagine an entire chunk of our population gasping for air or being forced to drink Flint’s water. We’ve permitted the electronic equivalent of that horrifying vision to play out in our cities .”   Bill Owens, Chief Development Officer of Krimson Technology @ hypervisible # OLCInnovate

Digital Redlining Digital Redlining puts people in a small box, and then uses algorithms to direct these same people into increasingly smaller boxes. Redlining is like an infinite loop of increasingly limited options. T he blend of filtering AND surveillance, leading to ongoing filtering, makes redlining a constant process. * Thanks to Bill Fitzgerald (@ funnymonkey ) for help on this!* @ hypervisible # OLCInnovate

The digital divide is a noun; it is the consequence of many forces. D igital redlining is a verb. @ hypervisible # OLCInnovate
