Evaluation is very essential for measuring progress towards the Goals, set up for the students, and determining the new goals which emerge as a result of new learning. Evaluation involves Quantitative and Qualitative evidence of the progress of students..
Why to Evaluate ? To measure the effectiveness of Instructors. To provide feedback to Students. To provide gratifications and motivation to students. To find out the effectiveness of teaching and learning process. To make teaching learning process more effective .

Examination Vs. Evaluation The term ‘examination’ is used for only the academic subjects while evaluation covers all the changes that take place in development of man’s personality and measures the qualities of an individual in every walk of life. . Evaluation is much more comprehensive and inclusive term than measurement and testing. Evaluation always includes value judgments concerning the desirability of the results.
Paradigm Shift in Teaching - Learning Process and evaluation system: Behaviorism Constructivism Teacher Centered student Centered Lecture Method Creating teaching environment Delivering Lecture Designing and playing team game Teaching to learn How to Learn If a new approach to learning and teaching is to be developed, a new model of evaluation is needed
An Open Book Exam: Innovation in the field of Evaluation : An "open book examination" is one in which examinees are allowed to consult their class notes, textbooks, and other approved material while answering questions . I f we are accepting paradigm shift in teaching i.e teach the students HOW TO LEARN ? , we should adopt innovative evaluation method also. Teaching means the ability to acquire knowledge, to modify existing knowledge on the basis of new experience, to build new knowledge, and to apply available knowledge to solve problems and make intelligent decisions. Teaching - Learning and Evaluation goes hand in hand , so for this situation Open Book is the Best solution.
Format of questions in Open book exam: Higher order Questions I f the question is ‘Explain the roles and functions of NCTE,’ students easily transfer the information from a textbook to a answer book. In the open book exam the question format be such that test the students ability of thinking, decision making, sense of mind , awareness of accountability, responsibility creative thinking, problem solving ability, time management skill etc. Questions should be ‘ 1) Are you satisfied with the roles and functions of NCTE? Justify your answer.’ OR 2) ‘Suggest the modification in the roles and functions of NCTE’.
Instead of asking ‘What is Qualitative Research? Explain its steps with an example. In open book exam we should ask, Prepare Qualitative research proposal for the research problem, ‘A study of family environment and Values of Refugees of India. ’ In Open Book exam we should ask ;’ Write the Objectives and Hypothesis for following problem of the Research.’
Teaching Style in the Open Book Exam: Teachers will have to design tasks that will provide exercises for the appropriate mental skills required in each subject. Teachers will have discussions, questions, and other active processes.in the Classroom. Divergent learning Experiences should be used. New techniques of teaching such as : Brainstorming, Flipped Classroom, Blended Learning will be used. Classroom will become activities room.
Learning style in the Open Book Exam: They will stop rote learning or mugging information or answers. They will try to use their uniqueness in learning. In conventional examination students think that ‘studying’ means memorize the books and note books for prescribed syllabus. Open book examinations will effect a fundamental change in this attitude. If textbooks can be consulted in the examination rooms, why bother to memorize them?
Does this mean that students don't need to "study" for examinations? No. It implies that studying should not be equated with memorizing; instead, it should be understanding concepts, and using these concepts to practice the skills of modifying and building knowledge, thinking critically, and solving problems. In acquiring the right strategies of studying, nothing is as effective as the shocking realization that mugging is of no use in the examinations. Education process will become pleasant and joyful
