Open Educational Resources The pros and cons of Stacy Hudson OER Training Fall 2024
Benefits Cost-savings for students Equitable and inclusive Easy to incorporate into Canvas for online courses Adaptable with certain CC licenses Supports knowledge sharing and knowledge acquisition
Saves Costs for Students Utilizing free, open source textbooks and other materials eliminates the need for students to have to purchase expensive textbooks while already financially burdened with the cost of tuition and fees.
More Equitable and Inclusive Utilizing open source course materials eliminates the need for ample financial resources to access learning, making education more equitable, inclusive, and accessible to all.
Easy to Incorporate into Courses Digital textbooks and materials can be paired easily into Canvas course shells or distributed to students as PDFs or printed packets. The Creative Commons link inside Canvas allows educators to search for and utilize thousands of free open source resources for a variety of courses and in a variety of disciplines.
Adaptable with Certain CC Licenses As long as an open education resource has a CC license that doesn’t include ND (No Derivatives), then it can be customized and adapted to the instructor’s and learner’s needs.
Supports Knowledge Sharing and Knowledge Acquisition OER materials provide greater capacity to share acquired knowledge and subject area expertise. Not just locally but worldwide, which prohibits monopolization of educational materials and supports students of all economic backgrounds in their ability to access education.
Challenges Quality of resources Availability of resources Difficulty finding OER resources Difficulty properly citing OER resources Updates may not be seamless
Quality of Resources Not all open educational resources are peer reviewed or vetted for accuracy. Instead, they rely on the content creator’s credibility. Poor quality OER materials could inhibit the learning process rather than enhance it.
Availability of Resources Some academic disciplines have a wide variety of open educational resources, while other fields are limited in the quantity and diversity of available materials.
Difficulty Finding Resources Finding OER materials can be challenging and takes time and practice! While different repositories for OER materials exist, they’re not widely known about nor easy to navigate.
Difficulty Properly Citing Resources Citing OER resources with proper attribution is even more challenging as it is critical to get the attribution of the license precise. But openwa.org does provide an easy to use Attribution Builder to help with this at openwa.org .
Updates Might Not Be Seamless Searching for updated materials and reintegrating them into your courses can be a challenge from year to year. Yet outdated materials are not beneficial for today’s learners.
