Project Fellows & Fellowships “Opportunities in Physics” Project fellows : Most of the research institutes, and Universities, IITS, NITS may require project staff to work in their specific research project. Once you selected you may receive the specific fellowship as specified in the contract. In most of the cases you will be encouraged to register for the PhD (as soon as you qualify any eligibility test) and continue the project side by side. Fellowship: ● The JRF selected candidate through CSIR-UGC National Eligibility Test (NET) will receive the stipend of INR 31000 per month for the period of two years. In addition, annual contingent grant of INR 20,000 per fellow will be provided to the University / Institution. On completion of two years as JRF and if the fellow is registered for Ph.D., the fellowship will be upgraded to SRF (NET). The Stipend will also increase to INR 35,000 per month after 2 years. In addition, candidates selected in IIT, NITs, or other research institutions through other exams such as GATE, JEST, TIFR etc, are also entitled to get same amount of fellowships. INSPIRE Fellowship Apart from this there are some government fellowships for doing research in some specific foreign countries and advertisements for this will comes in time to time You have to look UGC , MHRD , SERB and DST sites regularly for these information. ● ● ● ● ●

Research in abroad interview. “Opportunities in Physics” To do research in USA: You should appear for GRE and TOEFL exams (English-language test) Depending upon institute, you can be asked to produce recommendations, statement (s) of purpose, GRE scores for the standard exam, GRE scores for subject test (only some require this) Based on your score, you should apply for different universities Based on the merit and availability of seats, they will give admission. In most of the case you will get the stipend which will be enough for your expenses + a good savings. To do research in UK: You should appear for GRE and TOEFL exams (English-language test) Very basic requirements would be to have a very high GPA, substantial research and work experience, and letters from well known professors. Apply directly to UK professors with your CV and interests. To do research in Germany (or other European countries): Typically, no entrance test required Research during Master’s Thesis or other research experience is mostly required. Candidate must arrange recommendation letters from two Professors. Candidate may be interviewed online. Your command over English language will also be tested during

Jo b s “Opportunities in Physics” ● Minimum and basic qualification: Master’s degree with at least 55% marks. ● Qualified NET exam in relevant subject. ● From July, 202 3 , NET is now minimum eligibility for Asst. Professors in Universities /Colleges. . ● However, this minimum eligibility doesn’t ensure you an immediate Assistant Professor job, Because you have to sit for the interviews in every individual universities and colleges in which you’re applying. ● There are many advertisements of colleges/universities released from time to time, that asks for recruitment of assistant professors. ● In addition there are other state level exams conducted by state governments for selection in Government colleges of state. E.g. SLET or SET, HPSC, PPSC etc. ● The final selection is mostly based upon your overall merit: screening test marks (if any), your academic performance starting from Class 12 th , National and International Conferences, Research paper & Proceedings, Books published etc. Assistant Professor in Colleges/Universities:

Jo b s “Opportunities in Physics” ● Other Teaching Opportunities: Beginning from July 2021, MHRD has set the norms that people who are applying for post of assistant professor in engineering universities , they should either have their Ph.D. completed , or they should be enrolled in a Ph.D. programme already. No such restriction is there currently if you are applying as a lecturer/assistant professor in private/government engineering colleges. ● There are many advertisements released from time to time, that asks for assistant professors on contractual basis (usually displayed as assistant professor Grade-I/Grade-II on the institute’s websites). If you have a tough time finding a permanent job, you can apply for these posts. Institutes usually hire you for a period ranging from 3 months - 1 year (to the best of my knowledge). It would add to your experience. ● If you hold Master’s degree in engineering , UGC-NET may or may not be a mandatory criteria for your selection. However, it varies between colleges/universities. There are many private institutes who will take you if you hold Master’s degree and you are not UGC-NET qualified . So, do make sure to check against the job advertisement if UGC-NET is a mandatory criteria for the selection. ● The Tier1 Indian institutes, such as IITs, NITs, BITS, IIITs etc., and many other top private universities generally won’t hire you without a Doctoral/Post Doctoral degree, and a decent number of publications . Even the minimum qualification for contractual position in such institutes is a Ph.D. So if you want to be an assistant professor in such institutes, it’s good that you have your Ph.D completed. ● INSPIRE Faculty Scheme (DST), VAJRA Faculty Scheme (SERB), etc

Jo b s “Opportunities in Physics” Other Teaching Opportunities: ● Senior Secondary School Teacher (PGT): You need a Post-Graduation degree in a teaching subject (non-professional, degree courses) and a Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.) degree. You can appear for CTET (Central Teacher Eligibility Test) after completion of your B.Ed. Cracking CTET will help you become a teacher in schools under the Central Government (e.g: Kendriya Vidyalaya). You can also appear for STET (State Teacher Eligibility Test) cracking which will enable you to become a teacher in schools under State Governments. Other Job Opportunities: ● Qualify appropriate exams and join government organisations like ISRO, BARC, DRDO, NTPC, ONGC, BHEL,etc. ● One-Year Post-M.Sc. Diploma in Radiological Physics conducted by BARC (Equivalent to MSc in Medical Physics). Selection on basis of entrance test and Interview. Stipend: INR 25,000 (non-sponsored) candidates. Jobs in hospitals involving radiotherapy or in industries. ● Freelancing, You tuber, Online Tutoring, Blogging/Content Writing. ● Post Doctoral Fellowship in India/Abroad

11 Ms.Lipsa Shibu St.Thomas College,Kerala I have seen some of the students who were pursuing their research in Physics in top institutes such as IISC ,IIT (not only top institutes but others as well)but after PhD unable to find job in the academic.(Like some private colleges ask for equalency of the courses and so on..) Eventually we are doing all these hardworks to get a job and become financially stable. So my question is 1) Are there enough vacancies in the private/government colleges across India for the post of assistant professor in physics?(If possible, can you tell me your journey..like did you get this job right after clearing net or did you waited..) 2)For getting a job in the academic, what do you personally prefer? wheather clearing net and joining a college/obtaining a jrf ,doing PhD and then think about it. 3) Can you tell me the procedure of getting the job in the government colleges? I am preparing for my net exam .In that perspective, the class was really good and thought provoking . I do expect these kind of classes in the future. 12 Mr. Sankar Shaw The heritage school Sir I need a basic physics book at least which help me for net exam or tell me any website link?
