Using Oral Language, Stance, and Behavior in Different Oral Communication Situations
Language is any formal system of gestures, signs, sounds, and symbols used or conceived as a means of communicating thought.
Oral language or oral communication refers to an interaction in which words are used to relay a message. -also called as verbal communication. -spoken language
Attributes of Effective Oral Language
1. CLARITY Language must have a correct grammatical structure. Words to be used should also be precise and can be understood by the audience. Avoid highfalutin or flowery words so not to confuse the audience. Just keep it simple and clear.
2. Brevity (direct and conversational) Speaking orally or delivering a speech involves a live audience. Simple words should be used to make the person you are talking to understand quickly and easily the idea you want to convey. Where did you go? I went to La Trinidad, Benguet (Direct to the point)
3. Appropriateness Use language that are appropriate to the environment or occasion.
4. Vividness Colorful language that appeals to the senses (visual, smell, taste, sound and touch) enlivens the speech. Vividness maybe achieved through the use of imagery . These word of pictures or images produce powerful feelings in the listener’s mind.
5. Ethical Words should be carefully chosen in consideration of the gender, roles, ethnicity, preferences, and status of the person or people you are talking to.
BODY LANGUANGE: Stance
What's the first thing that will come on to your mind when you hear the word body language? Do you do it often? Or everyday?
Body Language is an expression through an action or a posture that can easily be said without uttering a word.
UPRIGHT AND OPEN POSTURE STANCE You communicate numerous messages by the way you stand or sit. Speaking with your back turned or looking at the floor or ceiling should be avoided. To sum it up, stance or position is like a voice that says many things with out you knowing it. Indicate friendliness, openness and willingness to listen
CROSSED ARMS AND LEGS POSTURE Unfriendliness, unwillingness to listen, anxiety, defensive
ARM AKIMBO OR HAND ON THE HIPS Ready and in control, sign of aggressiveness
ACTIONS OR GESTURES ARE IMPORTANT FOR YOUR LISTENER TO HELP CONVEY YOUR MEANING.
HAND ON YOUR CHIN You are not ready to talk because you are thinking of what you will say.
TWO HANDS CUPPED IN FRONT OF YOUR CHEST You are not open for conversation and you look defensive.
HANDS AT THE BACK AND HANDS IN THE POCKET You are HIDING something .
