Ovary types of flowering plants

Ovary In flowering plants an ovary is part of the female reproductive organ of flower. Especially it is the part of the pistil which holds the ovule and is located above or below or at the point of connection with the base of the petals and sepals.

Types of Ovary the ovary is divided into three types which are discussed below. Superior ovary a superior ovary is an ovary attached to the receptacle above the attachment of other floral parts. A superior ovary is found in types of fleshy fruits such as true berries etc. A flower with this arrangement is called hypogynous.

Persistent ovary It is also known as half superior or partially inferior ovary. It is embedded or surrounded by receptacles. Having sepals, petals, and stamens around the edge of a cuplike receptacle containing the ovary, as in flowers of the rose or cherry.

Inferior ovary this type of ovary lies below the attachment of floral parts. Flower with inferior ovaries are termed as epigynous . Examples of inferior ovary are orchids and members of family Asteraceae .
