RECAP DJ

1. Compare and contrast the geocentric and heliocentric models and identify the philosophers who supported them. 2. . Re-Create a model of the Universe proposed by the early Greek Philosophers and Astronomers using cut-out images of planets and celestial objects. 3. Value and appreciate the contributions of early astronomers in shaping our understanding of the universe. At the end of this lesson the student should be able to;

Guide Questions: What does the geocentric model say about the position of the Earth in the universe? What are the key differences between the geocentric and heliocentric models? Why do you think the heliocentric model was eventually accepted over the geocentric model?

What does the geocentric model say about the position of the Earth in the universe? What are the key differences between the geocentric and heliocentric models? Why do you think the heliocentric model was eventually accepted over the geocentric model?

OVERVIEW: Geocentric vs Heliocentric: The Evolution of the Universe

Group 1 and Group 3: The Creators   Instruction: Re-create the Heliocentric and Geocentric model of the universe using a cut-out image of planets, sun, and other celestial objects provided by the teacher . G1: Geocentric Model 1. Place the Earth at the center of a manila paper. 2. Arrange the planets, Moon, and Sun in concentric circles around the Earth. 3. Glue the cut-out images in place. 4. Label each planet and celestial object . G3: Heliocentric Model 1. Place the Sun at the center of a manila paper. 2. Arrange the planets in their respective orbits around the Sun. 3. Include the Moon in orbit around the Earth. 4. Glue the cut-out images in place. 5. Label each planet and celestial object.

Group 2 and 4: A Model Philo-SUPER. Instruction: I’ll be giving you some pictures of the Greek philosophers and astronomers who proposed Geocentric and Heliocentric Model of the Universe. G2: Research about their life’s background and where they were well-known for. List their contributions in shaping to the understanding of the Universe. G4: Research on their model of the universe and explain why it is considered whether Geocentric or Heliocentric.

PRESENTATION

Geocentric Model (Earth-Centered)

Geocentric Model (Earth-Centered)

Philosophers supported Geocentric Model ARISTOTLE PTOLEMY

Widely accepted because the Sun and stars appear to move around Earth.

HELIOCENTRIC MODEL ( SUN-CENTERED)

PROPOSED BY: NICOLAUS COPERNICUS

SUPPORTED HELIOCENTRIC MODEL GALILEO GALILEI JOHANNES KEPLER

So, what led from one model to be replaced by another?

The geocentric model was replaced by the heliocentric model because scientific observations and mathematical evidence proved that the Sun, not Earth, is at the center of the solar system.

Though initially opposed by the Catholic Church, the overwhelming scientific evidence led to the eventual acceptance of the heliocentric model as the accurate representation of our solar system.

ANY QUESTIONS OR CLARIFICATION CLASS?

GROUP ACTIVITY: COsMICs ENTHUSIAST Instruction: You are going to make a comic strip or a dialogue conversation between the individuals who proposed the Geocentric model and those individuals who proposed the Heliocentric model of the universe. Ends your work to a concluding statement.

I proposed that the sun is at the center of our solar system and the earth orbits around it. I disagree! The earth is clearly at the center , and the celestial bodies orbit around it. It’s the only explanation for the motions we observe. I agree with Ptolemy. The earth’s centrality is evident from the natural motion of objects in our planet. But you have considered the retrograde motion of planets? It’s much more easily explained by a heliocentric model. Retrograde motion can be explained by epicycles, which fit perfectly within the geocentric framework. Epicycles are inappropriate and unnecessary. A heliocentric model is more elegant and accurate. I’ve run the calculations, and the heliocentric aligns perfectly with a scientific astronomical observations. But what about the lack of observable stellar parallax? Doesn’t that prove the earth is stationary? The stars are simply much farther than we think. The parallax is too small to detect with the current instrument. CONCLUDING STATEMENT; The universe is full of mysteries waiting to be unraveled. Let us continue to explore and refine our understanding. HELIOCENTRIC VS. GEOCENTRIC MODEL OF THE UNIVERSE: A SIMPLE DEBATE

GROUP ACTIVITY

LET US SUMMARIZE !

QUIZ TIME PAGE 01 SOLAR SYSTEM PRESENTATION

PAGE 01 1. Grade 12-HUMSS student observes that the Sun appears to move across the sky from east to west. In the past, people believed this was evidence that Earth was at the center of the universe. Which model of the universe is based on this belief? A. Heliocentric model B. Geocentric model C. Big Bang model D. Steady-State model

PAGE 01 2. Which observation provided the strongest evidence against the geocentric model of the universe? A. The Sun rises in the east and sets in the west. B. The stars appear to move together in the night sky. C . Galileo observed moons orbiting Jupiter through a telescope. D. Ancient astronomers believed Earth was the center of the universe.

PAGE 01 3. Why did scientists eventually accept the heliocentric model instead of the geocentric model? A. The geocentric model was proven false by ancient philosophers. B. The heliocentric model was easier to understand. C. New observations and calculations provided evidence for heliocentrism. D. Religious leaders declared the heliocentric model to be true.

4. Which statement correctly compares the geocentric and heliocentric models? A. The geocentric model states that planets orbit the Sun, while the heliocentric model states that the Sun orbits Earth. B. The geocentric model was widely accepted for centuries, but the heliocentric model is now supported by scientific evidence. C. The geocentric model and heliocentric model both claim that planets move in elliptical orbits. D. The geocentric model is based on gravitational attraction, while the heliocentric model is not.

PAGE 01 5. What does the transition from the geocentric to the heliocentric model show about the nature of science? A. Scientific ideas are based on opinions and do not change. B. Scientific models evolve when new evidence challenges old theories. C. Scientists always agree on theories and never change them. D. Ancient scientific ideas should never be questioned.

ASSIGNMENT Do/Have an advance reading about the different ancient astronomers, philosophers, and/or mathematicians who proposed the different models of the universe namely Eudoxus, Aristotle, Aristarchus, Ptolemy, and Copernicus. ADDITIONAL ASSIGNMENT: Reflection Journal
