Activity (10 minutes) The particiapants should sit in groups of not more than 5 members Lets all brainstorm on the following What is teaching? What makes a good teacher? Share with us your reflections and findings (Each Group should participate) Identify unique key aspects presented by the different groups
What is teaching? “A set of complex skills employed to realize a specified set of instructional objectives” The complexity is based on: 1. Behavior, 2. Attitude, 3. Learning, 4. Content about the subject matter, 5. personality of leaners & 6. Patience It is about motivating students to learn, which should be done in a manner that is relevant, meaningful and memorable
Teaching Skills Analytical & reasoning skill Ability to realize & correct mistakes Turn taking ability Comprehension Questioning Knowledge dissemination Information transfer
What is Learning? A permanent change in behavior after undergoing a particular experience The kinds of learning: Single loop learning Double loop learning Deutero learning
What is learning? Knowledge acquisition: What is knowledge? To know that you know To know that you don’t know To know what you don’t know & To know that you should not know that
Curriculum & Content Internationalize your curriculum Incorporate multinational experience & thought Culturally inclusive Include international issues Kindle them to think nationally, internationally & globally
Staff Have international links with your colleagues, former colleagues, etc Create links with international companies & institutions Establish networks Establish student, staff exchange
Students/Pupils Encourage students to question Allow them present their cases, projects, papers, etc Teach & practise ‘research skills ’ Fuel their imagination & creativity
DEFINITION OF PARTICIPATORY APPROACH Participatory Learning Technique (PLT) is a way of organizing the classroom that motivates learners to participate in the act of teaching. It is an interactive teaching method or learner centered teaching method. Leaners are not empty plates to be imparted in Knowledge (Teach Concept). Rather the fact is that learners can construct knowledge and learn on their own if properly guided (learn concept)
Participatory Approach Explained Participatory apporach is similar to content based or task based approach. This Approach was founded by Paulo Freire(Read more about him) Freire believed that education is meaningful to the extent that it engages learners in reflecting on their relationship to the world they live in. This provides them with the means to shape their world.
THE GOAL To help the students to understand the social, historical or cultural forces that affect their lives, and then to help to empower students to take action and take decision in order to gain control over their lives
THE TEACHING PROCESS The teacher engages the students in initial discussion. The teacher poses a problem. The teacher give a task related to the problem The Teacher acts as a facilitator
LEARNING PROCESS Education is most effective when it is experience centered students are motivated by their personal involvement Teachers are co-learners Students discuss what they have learned in the class
ILLUSTRATING AN EXAMPLE OF PATICIPATORY APPROACH The teacher engages the students in initial discussion. “There are children who are afraid of the dark and can not wake up early in morning to go to school” The teacher asks the students a question: “ Have you ever experienced this problem?” Students : “Yes” Teacher: How do you solve this problem based on your experience? Students: I think we should install street lights Teacher: Can you write a letter to the city mayor office to request for better light? Students: Okay THAT IS THE EXAMPLE OF PARTICIPATORY APPROACH!

ACTIVITY Use 10 minutes in your groups Discuss the meaning and characterisitcs of a reflective teacher Suggest one way in which you can make your lesson reflective. Lets brainstorm on various participatory teaching methods
Participatory Teaching Learning Strategies Brain storming Workshop Presentation Aquarium Case study method Role plays Project based learning
BRAINSTORMING DESCRIPTION “Brainstorming is a group activity where each participant shares their ideas as soon as they come to mind” Frequently used method to solve problems. It is necessary to respect the principle of non-criticism, fantasy release, mutual inspiration and equality of participants
AQUARIUM DESCRIPTION The aquarium strategy is one of the active learning strategies based on group training. The student observes, the extent to which this affects the behaviors and outcomes of group members, and helps to learn a variety of social skills among students. One group of students solves the problem The second group observes and then provides the feedback.
ROLE PLAYS DESCRIPTION The group gets the script with roles. Students play a selected situation and examine the various possible approaches to solving problems or unforeseen events. Role-play is a technique that allows students to explore realistic situations by interacting with other people in a managed way in order to develop experience and trial different strategies in a supported environment.
Methods PPTs Role play Turn taking Hand outs for discussion Quizzes Zero hour Mock press
Discussion Lets reflect on the participatory teaching and learning methods we have mentioned right now. Which one would you opt to use and why? Think of a participatory teaching method you are interested in and prepare a five minutes lesson you present to your fellow participants in this workshop.
Participatory Teaching - Learning Cycle
What are the PTL Skills? 1. Questioning: lead, probing, door openers, clarificatory, classificatory, etc 2. Kindling interest 3. Experience sharing 4. Encouraging innovation 5. Turn- taking 6. Reinforcement skills
What are the PTL Skills? 7. Silence 8. Explaining & illustrating 9. Example- giving 10. Effective use of BB, PPT, etc 11. Encouraging learners’ discussion 12. Parliamentary methods/ words 13. Cheerful & lively
Benefits of PTL 1. Keen observation 2. Active Listening 3. Positive Interaction 4. Recall of content/ Recollection of the process 5. Defining the concept
CONCLUSION Participatory approach is based on solving the learners’ problem in real life. Leraners bring their outside problems into class This method can build confidences of the students so as to be active in the community and in their lives.
