What is a Story? A story is a sequence of events told to entertain, teach, or share. Stories usually have characters, a setting, and a plot.

The Main Parts of a Story Exposition (Beginning) Rising Action Climax Falling Action Resolution (Ending)

Exposition Introduces: characters, setting, and background information Sets the stage for the rest of the story Example: Harry Potter arriving at the Dursleys’ house in The Philosopher’s Stone

Inciting Incident The pivotal event in a story that changes the characters life It gets the story's main conflict in motion Ex – Luke finds Princess Leia’s message in R2D2

Rising Action The series of events that build tension and suspense Main conflict begins Example: Katniss volunteering as tribute in The Hunger Games

Climax The turning point or most intense moment in the story The conflict reaches its peak Example: The final battle in The Lion King

Falling Action Events that happen after the climax Conflicts begin to be resolved Example: Aragorn crowned King in Lord of the Rings; Return of the King

Resolution The story comes to a conclusion Loose ends are tied up Example: Dorothy return home in the Wizard of Oz

Exposition → Rising Action → Climax → Falling Action → Resolution Resolution
