CONTINUOUS
STUDENT: ANNA IRIS ROMERO PÉREZ
SUBJECT: ENGLISH

WHAT IS IT?The past continuous, or past
progressive, tense describes
an action or situation that
began in the past and is still
going on in the present time. Grammargeek. (2018, May 5). Past Continuous Tense: Definition, useful rules and
examples. 7Esl.Com. https://7esl.com/past-continuous-tense/

The past continuous is
easily formed by pairing
up the verb to be’ with a
verb ending in -ed’
instead of -ing’ (e.g.
was talking).. Grammargeek. (2018, May 5). Past Continuous Tense: Definition, useful
rules and examples. 7Esl.Com. https://7esl.com/past-continuous-tense/

HOW TO USE IT?Example:
-While I was
washing the dishes,
I heard a loud
noise. To describe what
someone was
doing at a
particular point
in time. Example:
I was working in the
garden all day
yesterday. To describe
parallel action The past progressive
is often used to
denote an action that
was interrupted by an
event, or for two
actions taking place in
parallel. Often the past
progressive is mixed
with the past simple to
show what was
happening when
something happened. To express interrupted
action in the past. .
Example:
-I was driving to
work when I
crashed my car. To describe
repetition and
irritation. Example:
-He was always
complaining in
class.

Structure

When VS WhileGenerally, both “when” and “while”
conjunctions are related to past tense.
Whereas “while” emphasizes an act in
certain times or continues in a determined
time frame, “when” is used for actions in
the past that do not last or instant actions.

WHEN:-This conjunction is used for connecting the
meanings of two clauses into one sentence.
-It is used to emphasize the order of two short-
term actions
-It can used to connect an action with another
past action to express a past time frame. This
conjunction determines the past tense of another
action instead of using adverb of time (n.d.). Englishninjas.Com. Retrieved September 15, 2021, from
https://www.englishninjas.com/blog/en/when-while-use-in-english-and-examples/ -When the doorbell rang, the old man was
having a nap in the living room.
EXAMPLES:-When it rains heavily, all the streets and
pavements around get muddy. -Mike used to speak four languages when he
started primary school. -When the doorbell rang, I was sleeping. -When they went into the room, they saw
the surprise.

WHILE: -It is used with actions happening at a specific time.
-we use while to show that a shorter action (usually in the
past simple, e.g. the phone rang)
-happened during as a longer action (usually in past
progressive, e.g. I was cooking dinner).
-Often this shorter action interrupts the longer action.
You could use while with a state verb like ‘live’ if you really
want to focus on the fact that an action was in progress at a
specific time.
If a sentence uses while, it suggests that the action
happened over a period of time.
To emphasize (focus) that an action was in progress at a
specific time, use while + a progressive tense ( = While I was
eating, …) The difference: When vs. While (English grammar). (2017, October 26). Google.Com.
https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.englishcurrent.com/grammar/difference-while-when-
conjunctions/%3famp -While I was washing the dishes, my wife
came home. EXAMPLES:
-While she was driving, I played with
the radio
-While I was living in India, there was a
big earthquake.
-While I was cooking dinner, the phone
rang.
-While the phone was ringing, I was
making lunch.

Thank you!
