Volleyball was invented in 1895 by William G. Morgan in Holyoke, Massachusetts, as a less vigorous alternative to basketball. Initially called "Mintonette," the game quickly gained popularity through the YMCA, and the name was changed to "volleyball" after a spectator noted the game's volleying nature. The sport's rules evolved over time, and it was added to the Olympics in 1964, with beach volleyball following in 1996.
