“Pedagogy” comes from the Greek
πας

(paîs, “child”) + γωγός

(agōgós,
“guide, escort”)

Pedagogy as a science
Pedagogy started to separate from philosophy in the 17
th

century
One of the important landmarks was the publication of
John Amos Comenius’s book
The Great Didactic [Didactica Magna]
(first published in Czech in 1648, Latin in 1657 and in English in
1896).

Pedagogy

As a system of activity (reflected in methods,
teaching materials)

defines pedagogy as the profession, science
or theory of teaching.

The object is education as specific,
purposeful, socially and personally
determined activity.
The subject is overall pedagogical
process as an organized, developing
interaction between educator and
educatee (student), taking place in
social institutions.

foundations, trends and perspectives of

Education
