KNOWING
ONESELF
First Chapter

Understanding Yourselves as Adolescents
✤As students, you are considered to be in the
developmental stage called ‘adolescence‘
✤You undergo different changes such as physical,
social, emotional, mental and spiritual development.
✤Many of you go through the same pattern of
development which help you accept yourselves

Understanding Yourselves as Adolescents
✤Being aware of the various changes that adolescence
entails may also enable you to better deal with fellow
adolescents
✤“The more you know yourself, the more patience you
have for what you see in others“ (Erik Erikson)

The Importance of Self-awareness
✤When you have a more accurate knowledge or
understanding of yourself, you are able to experience
yourself truthfully as unique and separate individual.
✤Self-awareness also empowers you to make personal
improvements by building on your areas of strength
and ascertaining aspects where you would like to
make progress.

The Importance of Self-awareness
✤Especially when you have a problem, the first step in
solving it is admitting that you have a problem (which
is part of self-awareness)
✤Introspection or self-awareness is indeed the starting
point that leads to any improvement. As self-
improvement is hardly possible without self-
awareness.

The Importance of Self-awareness
✤Self-awareness or self-knowledge is about
understanding your own habits, needs, desires,
failings, and everything else that matters in your
personality.
✤The more you know about yourself, the better you are
at adapting to life changes that suit your needs.

Ways to Improve Self-awareness
✤Make an effort to look at yourself objectively
✤Set your personal goals
✤Keep a journal
✤Make a self-review

Being in the Adolescent Stage

Adolescent Stage
✤The term ‘adolescence‘ came from the Latin word
adolescere which means ‘grow‘
✤Granville Stanley Hall, the Father of Adolescence,
defined it as the period of storm and stress of human
life. This period is characterized by teenager's conflict
with parents, mood disruptions and engagement in
risky behavior.

Adolescent Stage
✤Adolescence implies a stage of extreme transformation
and growth in an individual which encompass various
aspects of development such as physical, mental,
social and emotional.
✤A drastic shift from childhood to adulthood, the
period of numerous dramatic changes in the areas of
physiological, behavioral, intellectual, social and
personality development.

Adolescent Stage
✤Puberty signals the beginning of adolescence. The
whole period may be divided into three stages such as
the early, middle and late adolescence.
✤Early adolescence (approx 11-14 years old)
✤Middle adolescence (approx 15-17)
✤Late adolescence (approx 18-22)

Adolescent Stage
✤Your strengths as adolescents, among others, are your
physical health, energy, youthfulness, optimism,
bravery to try different endeavors, fearlessness, open-
mindedness, good memory, and lack of cynicism.

Adolescent Stage
✤On the other hand, your weaknesses are your lack of
experience, unestablished values and identities, low
self-concept and self-esteem, sensitivity and insecurity.
You are subject to hormonal mood swings, confusion,
expectations and pressures from the people around
you, especially the older ones.
