PERSONAL HYGIENE

INTRODUCTION Personal hygiene is the step to good grooming and good health. Elementary cleanliness is common knowledge. Neglecting it causes problem that you may not even be aware of. More often than you may know, good looks are the results of careful and continuous grooming. one of the most effective ways we have to protect ourselves and others from illness is good personal hygiene. This means washing your hands, especially but also your body It means being careful not to cough, sneeze on others, cleaning things that you touch if you are unwell, putting items such as tissues into a bin and using protection. Every external part of the body demands a basic amount of attention on a regular basis.

DEFINITION Personal hygiene may be described as the principle of maintaining cleanliness and grooming of the external body. People have been aware of importance of hygiene for thousands of years.

IMPORTANCE OF HYGIENE Body image : body image influences self esteem, confidence and motivation. Social reasons : by ensuring that our body is clean and well presented, we are more assured of projecting a positive body image that reflects our personality

Health reasons : poor hygiene can lead to poor health. If you have cut yourself the wound should be cleaned and dressed suitably, this can help reduce the risk of infection and pain Psychological issues : by being well presented, clean and tidy people feel more confident especially in social situations

AREAS TO MAINTAIN HYGIENE HAIR HYGIENE dirty head hairs does not actually cause many health problems. It’s mostly for appearance factor that keeping hair clean is a good idea. Tips : At some point of our life especially in our teenage years and at times of hormonal change, hair can become greasy more easily. So, the one solution is to wash hair every alternate days. For dandruff problem try anti dandruff shampoo Oiling hair before shower prevent dryness.

2. TEETH AND MOUTH A beautiful smile can make a person’s day but if teeth are grubby or breath is smelly, it has an entirely different results. TIPS: Drink plenty of water. Brush your teeth twice daily with a decent toothbrush. A fluoride based toothpaste and an antibacterial mouthwash. Avoid drinks such as tea, coffee and red wine which are thought to stain them. Visit your dentist regularly to keep a check on gum infection or any dental problems.

3. FOOT HYGIENE The feet contains lots of sweat glands. If feet are confined in socks and shoes the sweat gland has nowhere to evaporate and the skin bacteria will in effect attack to causing the pungent cheesy aroma. TIPS: Wash the feet regularly and dry thoroughly with a soft towel and an anti bacterial foot powder or baby talc. Allow feet to air when feasible and wear open shoes as much as possible. Change shocks more than once a day if needed and make sure they are cotton or other breathable fabric.

4. PERINEAL HYGIENE Vaginal itch is curable and does not need intensive treatment . TIPS: Stay dry and clean Shower daily Rinse out all the soap. Make sure the intimates are not tight, cotton is a preferred material. Vaginal wash can be used instead of mild soap and water. Change the undergarments daily.

5. BODY WASH AND HAND WASHING A regular bath helps in keeping clean, fresh and odor free. TIPS : Bathing helps to rejuvenate the skin removing the dead cells and prevent acne, blemishes and other skin eruptions. Make a personal towel and wash them regularly . Make a proper habit of hand washing after using latrines, before eating and after eating.

6. NAIL HYGIENE Keeping finger and toe nails trimmed and in good shape will prevent problems such as hand nails and infected nail beds. TIPS: Trim the nails weekly and brush them daily with soap so that no dirt or residue remains beneath the nail. Moisture nails and cuticles regularly. Place the finger inside Luke warm water with salt to make them strong.

7. SKIN HYGIENE Even our skin needs to breathe fresh air . TIPS: Drink plenty of water i.e. 8-10 cups a day. Get plenty of rest 6-8 hours at night so that you are fresh and are ready to take on the day every morning. Wash the face with face wash gel twice daily mainly at night to prevent break outs and pimples. Make a schedule for one fruit a day for healthy and glowing skin. Use sun block of SPF 30 to prevent tanning and opening of skin pores.

8. MENSTRUAL HYGIENE Menstrual hygiene ensures that you can continue with the daily routine such as going to college, going to work or doing house hold chores. It can also prevent potential situations of embarrassment about yourself . TIPS: Wash the perineal part frequently. Use sanitary napkins, tampons and menstrual cups to stay clean. The standard time to change a sanitary pad is once every 6 hours, while for a tampon is once every 2 hours.

Do not flush the pads or tampons. Wash the hand well after you discard. Prevent yourself from pad rash which can occur when the pad has been wet for a long time and rubs along the thighs. Apply an antiseptic ointment after a bath and before bed this will heal the rash. Keep an extra sanitary pads or tampons properly stored in a clean pouch or paper bag. Always wash or clean the area in a motion that is from the vagina to the anus. Never wash in the opposite direction as it can cause bacteria from the anus to lodge in the vagina. Wrap the sanitary napkins well before discarding to ensure that the smell and infection is contained.
