PREVENTION & MITIGATION OF THIS IMPACT OF COASTAL PROCESSES, LAND DEVELOPMENT & WASTE DISPOSAL
OBJECTIVES: * K: Difine coastal erosion submersion, and saltwater intrusion. * S: Described the causes of coastal erosion, submersion,& saltwater intrusion. A: Gain patients of citing ways on how to protect mitigate the effects of coastal Processes.
What is Erosion? is the process where waves, currents, tides, and wind gradually wear away and remove rocks, soil, and sand from the coastline. This natural process can reshape beaches, cliffs, and shorelines over time.
A. Coastal Erosion - ( or shoreline retreat ) in the lass of coastal landsdue to the net removal of sediments or bedrock from the shoreline. - common phrase referring to the lass of subaerial landmass into sea or lake due to natural processes such as wave, wind, and tides or even due to human interference.
Coastal Processes -are naturally occurring processes that brings alternations to the coastal zones -They are interaction of marine, physical, metereological , geological and biological events.
Example of Coastal Erosion
Causes of Coastal Erosion Wave Action – Strong waves constantly hitting the shore can break down rocks and move sediments. 2. Sea Level Rise – Due to climate change, rising sea levels allow waves to reach further inland.
3. Human Activities – Construction, sand mining, and deforestation near coastlines weaken natural protection. 4. Storms and Typhoons – Powerful storms cause large waves and surges that speed up erosion.
Effects of Coastal Erosion: Loss of Habitat – Coastal erosion destroys habitats of plants and animals, such as sand dunes, wetlands, and mangroves. 2. Loss of Livelihood – Fishermen, farmers, and tourism businesses may suffer from reduced access to resources or tourists.
Coastal Erosion can be either a: - rapid- anset ( occurs very quickly, a period of days to weaks ). - slow- anset hazards ( occurring over many years, decades to centuries).
What is Coastal Submersion? Is the temporary or permanent flooding of coastal areas due to a rise in sea level or other oceanic events. It can occur during extreme weather conditions (like storms or hurricanes) or as a result of long-term changes such as climate change.
Temporary submersion - Caused by storm surges, high tides, or tsunamis.Water eventually recedes. Two Types of Submersion: 2. Permanent submersion - Caused by rising sea levels due to global warming and melting ice caps.Coastal land becomes permanently underwater.
