Lesson 7: the national artists of the Philippines for Architecture Philippine architecture is unique in that it reflects its cultural heritage and the demand to adapt to its environment. bahay kubo is a small one-room hut built using light woven materials. The Manila Cathedral in Intramuros is one of the architectural designs which bare the Spanish influence.
Pablo S. Antonio is one of the leaders in modern Philippine architecture. Some of his famous projects include the Far Eastern University Administration and Science buildings, Manila Polo Club, Ideal Theater. Istana Nurul Iman – a place of Sultan of Brunei which was designed by Leandro V. Locsin. Juan F. Nakpil – he believed that there is such a thing as Philippine architecture , espousing architecture reflective of Philippine traditions and culture. Landscape architecture is usually done by contouring the environment to enhance the appearance of a certain place.
Lesson 8: the national artists of the Philippines for Film Gaumont Chrono-photograph projector was used in showing the first films in 1897. The Lumiere Cinematograph was imported in Paris and used in shooting the first movie in the country in 1898 by Antonio Ramos. Lino Brocka was conferred in1997 He produced 66 films that “breathed life and hope for the marginalized sector of the society”
Maynila sa mga Kuto ng Liwanag is directed by Brocka and considered as one of the classics of Filipino cinema Ishmael Bernal directed the film Himala which is starred by Nora Aunor Himala is one of the greatest Filipino films of all time because of its provocative and courageous depictions that has served “as social commentaries and bold reflections on the existing realities of the struggle of the Filipino.”
Bernal’s contribution to Philippine cinema is both liberating and aesthetic as he pushes the artistry. According to NCCA , “polishing its visuals, or innovating in the medium, he manages to send his message across: to fight the censors, free the artists, give the justice to the oppressed, and enlighten as well as entertain the audience. ” Some of Bernal’s famous works include the films Dalawang Pugad , Isang Ibon , Lagi na Lamang Ba Akong Babae ?, Isang Gabi sa Iyo, Isang Gabi Sa Akin, Ikaw ay Akin, and Menor de Edad .
Gerardo De Leon – he is recognized as the most awarded film director in the country for the prestigious Filipino Academy of Movie Arts and Sciences (FAMAS) Awards equivalent to the Oscars. De Leon finished medicine but did not practice it to answer a calling in cinema. Rosa del Rosario and Rogelio de la Rosa starred the film Ang Maestra. Other popularized films of De Leon are: Sawa sa Lumang Simboryo , Noli Me Tangere, Sisa , Dyesebel, The Gold Bikini, Banaue, and the Brides of Blood Island, Dyesebel is an adaptation from Mars Ravelos classic komik about a mermaid birthed to human parents.
Fernando Poe, Jr. real name is Ronald Allan Kelley Poe He was conferred in 2006. He is also known as “Da King” or FPJ” He made over 200 films in his lifetime. His last movie was Pakners which was also starred by 9-ball billiard champion Efren “Bata” Reyes. Some of his well-known leading ladies in his films are Sharon Cuneta, Vilma Santos, Ara Mina, Maricel Soriano, Alice Dixon, and Charlene Gonzales.

Lesson 9: National artists of the Philippines for visual arts Philippine visual art is the confluence of both ethnic and Western traditions in the treatment of subject and the use of medium. Filipino visual artists still use native forms and subjects but with the use of foreign styles and techniques.
Napoleon Abueva conferred in 1976 He was born in 1930 in Tagbilaran Bohol and is considered the Father of Modern Philippine Sculpture. He is also the youngest awardee to receive the National Artist award. Ang Kiukok He was the one responsible for the paintings such as Pieta and Dog Fight. He was born to immigrant Chinese parents Vicente Ang and Chin Lim Art critics praise for works which are “imbued with national fervor and sociological agenda.”
Fernando Amorsolo was tagged as the “Grand Old Man of Philippine Art. He is the country’s first national artists He started his art education as an apprentice at the age of 13. Carlos “ Botong ” Francisco Francisco’s impressive works include Blood Compact, Bayanihan sa Bukid, First Mass at Limasawa , Magpupukot , Martyrdom of Jose Rizal, and Fiesta
Arturo Luz was a prominent printmaker, sculptor, and art administrator. he was conferred in 1997. J. Elizalde Navarro He represented the country at the Sao Paolo Biennale in Brazil for sculpture Guillermo E. Tolentino He was trained and educated in the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Rome. Many of his brilliant sculptures include Oblation and Bonifacio Monument. He designed the medals for the Ramon Magsaysay ward and the seal of the Republic of the Philippines
Jose T. Joya A former dean of the College of Fine Art of UP. He initiated the abstract expressionism in the country. Abstract expressionism is the use of the abstract style to convey strong emotional or expressive content. Francisco Conching He is a comic book maker with 53 comic novels to his name. Alfredo Roces noted that “for two decades, Fransisco Conching’s fanciful stories captured the popular imagination.
