Philippine Traditional Motifs and Crafts Before colonizers arrived, ethnic minorities used art for daily activities and religious rituals. Art forms include pottery, weaving, carving, metalwork, and jewelry. The first inhabitants arrived thousands of years ago, migrated via a land bridge from the Asian mainland, followed by Negrito or Aeta.

Pottery , one of the earliest art forms in the Philippines, is a representation of religious beliefs and practices. The Manunggal Jar in Palawan, a burial jar, depicts two men rowing a boat, reflecting the afterlife. Pottery produced practical items like cooking pots and storage vases, influenced by community traditions.

Weaving , an ancient art form in the Philippines, is renowned for its colorful, religious, and practical value. Cordilleras artisans create various forms, materials, and designs, including hats, mats, bags, baskets, and textiles.

Sculpture is a three-dimensional artwork made from hard or plastic materials. It represents ancestral spirits and granary gods, while woodcarvings from Palawan depict animals like birds as representations of religious beliefs. In Mindanao, Tausug and Maranao people use okir designs, such as the sarimanok , naga , and pako rabong , to represent their beliefs. These symbols represent their beliefs as a people.

PHYSICAL ORNAMENTATION Can be categorized to three areas specifically the use of traditional costumes (textile),jewelries and tattoos. The designs vary depending on the location , users and function of the ornaments.

Okir is a term for geometric designs and folk motifs found in Maranao , MaguindanXao , and Muslim-influenced artwork, particularly in the southern Philippines and Southeast Asia. It refers to ornamental designs for men and women, with okir a dato for men and okir a bay for women.

Ukkil , a traditional art form in Islamic Mindanao, features foliate designs in household items, architectural details, and royal paraphernalia, interpreted in various materials like wood, silver, carabao horn, and gilt brass.

MANLILIKHA NG BAYAN As envisioned under R.A. 7355, " Manlilikha ng Bayan" shall mean a citizen engaged in any traditional art uniquely Filipino whose distinctive skills have reached such a high level of technical and artistic excellence and have been passed on to and widely practiced by the present generation in his/her community with the same degree of technical and artistic competence.

GUIDELINES ON HOW ONE CAN BECOME MANLILIKHA NG BAYAN a. He/she is an inhabitant of an indigenous/traditional cultural community anywhere in the Philippines that has preserved indigenous customs, beliefs, rituals and traditions and/or has syncretized whatever external elements that have influenced it. b. He/she must have engaged in a folk art tradition that has been in existence and documented for at least fifty (50) years. c. He/she must have consistently performed or produced over a significant period, works of superior and distinctive quality. d. He/she must possess a mastery of tools and materials needed by the art, and must have an established reputation in the art as master and maker of works of extraordinary technical quality . e. He/she must have passed on and/or will pass on to other members of the community their skills in the folk art for which the community is traditionally known. To become a " Manlilikha ng Bayan", the candidate must possess the following qualifications:

A traditional artist who possesses all the qualities of a Manlilikha ng Bayan candidate, but due to age or infirmity has left him/her incapable of teaching further his/her craft, may still be recognized if: a. He/she had created a significant body of works and/or has consistently displayed excellence in the practice of his/her art, thus achieving important contributions for its development. b . He/she has been instrumental in the revitalization of his/her community's artistic tradition. c . He/she has passed on to the other members of the community skills in the folk art for which the community is traditionally known. d . His/her community has recognized him/her as master and teacher of his/her craft .

GAWAD SA MANLILIKHANG BAYAN AWARDEES OF 1993 GINAW BILOG (2003 -Poet He is Hanunoo Mangyan from Mansalay , Mindoro Already steeped in the wisdom that the ambahan is a key to the understanding of the Mangyan soul, Ginaw took it upon himself to continually keep scores of ambahan poetry recorded, not only on bamboo tubes but on old, dog-eared notebooks passed on to him by friends. Most treasured of his collection are those inherited from his father and grandfather, sources of inspiration and guidance for his creative endeavors . Up to his last days, Ginaw shared old and new ambahans with his fellow Mangyans and promotes this poetic form in every occasion.

2. MASINO INTARAY (+2013) - A gifted poet,bard artist and Musician who was born near the head of the river in Makagwa valley on the foothill of Mantalingayan mountain in Palawan. An outstanding master of the basal, kulilal and bagit Basal - or gong music ensemble. Kulilal - is a highly lyrical poem expressing passionate love sang with the accompaniment of the kusyapi (two-stringed lute), played by a man, and pagang (bamboo zither), played by a woman.
