LIFE –CENTERED EDUCATION SUMMITTED BY BLESSY S S- 39 NATURAL ScIENCE

It is learning by experience. The teacher’s duty is to create problematic situation for the child. It will help the child to solve problems of life. Gandhiji’s basic education which is craft-centered is an example of life centred education.

It aims at preparing a child to lead a harmonious life. The basis of Life centered education is to take life itself as the centre of education. Education is not merely the acquisition of mental knowledge and physical skills.

When mental ideals and innovations are integrated with existence on the physical plane, life becomes comfortable, soft, cultured and rich. This is the highest goal which civilization can aim for.

Characteristics of life centred education Education is imparted through a craft or productive activity. Closely related to the life around. Here pupils learn by doing something directly related to their life. Education includes a love for work among children, and teaches them the dignity of labour. Subjects are not compartmentalised. All that the children learn become meaningful, correlated to life and significant to them.

It offers children various kinds of activities for their all round development. It makes them self-reliant, creative, co-operative and socially efficient. It develops qualities of leadership, loyalty, co-operation, sympathy, honesty, etc.

Learning to be The aim of education is to develop the potential and talents hidden in every person. These include memory , reasoning power, imagination, physical ability, aesthetic sense, aptitude to communicate with each other and the natural charisma of group leadership.

Learning to live together It described it as the foundation of education. A new spirit for a peaceful world order can be created. Education would create and underlie this new spirit which will develop the values of pluralism, mutual understanding and peace.
