What is Phonics? Phonics is a way of teaching children to read by connecting sounds (phonemes) with letters (graphemes). It helps beginner readers to: - Recognize letter sounds - Blend sounds to make words - Improve reading fluency

Short Vowel Sounds a – apple, ant e – egg, pen i – igloo, pin o – ox, dog u – sun, cup

Blending Sounds (CVC Words) cat = c + a + t dog = d + o + g sun = s + u + n pen = p + e + n pig = p + i + g

Beginning Sounds b – ball, bat c – cat, cup m – man, mat s – sun, sit t – top, tap

Ending Sounds p – cap, map t – cat, mat n – pen, sun g – dog, pig d – bed, red

Reading Practice Sentences • The cat sat on the mat. • The dog is in the sun. • A pig is in the pen. • I see a red cup.
