Physical properties of alkanes For B-Pharm Students Presented By- Sandhya Punetha
PHYSICAL PROPERTIES The first 4 alkanes ( C1 to C4) are gases; next 13 members ( C5 to C17) are liquids and other higher alkanes after 18 are waxy solids. Alkanes have non polar molecules and hence are insoluble in water but are soluble in non polar solvents like- benzene; carbon tetrachloride. The boiling point of alkanes increases with their molecular weight but their melting point does not increases in such a manner. Density of alkanes increases with size of the molecules.
Alkanes that exhibit in isomeric form, the branched chain isomers have low boiling point.
Hope is tomorrow’s veneer over today’s disappointment Thank you
