Piaget's Pre-operational Stage The pre-operational stage occurs from ages 2-7. Children begin to think symbolically. Logical reasoning and understanding perspectives are still developing. by ANANTA CHALISE

Symbolic Functioning 1 Using Symbols Children use objects to represent others. 2 Pretend Play A banana becomes a phone in their imagination. 3 Abstract Thought Imagination and abstract thinking begin.

Egocentrism Limited Perspective Children struggle to see other viewpoints. Three Mountains Task Piaget's study showed children chose their own view. Real-Life Example Covering eyes, thinking others can't see them.

Lack of Conservation Appearance vs. Reality Quantity stays the same despite changes. Liquid Task Water in a taller glass seems like more. Focus on Looks Children focus on appearances, not logic.

Why No Conservation? Centration Focusing on one aspect, ignoring others. Irreversibility Can't mentally reverse actions. Egocentrism Only seeing their own perspective.

Animism Feelings for Objects Inanimate objects have feelings. Examples "The sun is happy!" or "My doll is sad."

Hierarchical Classification 1 Categorization Struggling to categorize by multiple features. 2 Flower Example More red flowers or more flowers?

Evaluation Simpler Tasks Children perform better with simpler tasks. 1 Playful Methods Child-friendly language improves results. 2 Piaget underestimated abilities. Tasks were too complex.
