Functions can be used to model real situations. Identifying an appropriate function model will lead to a better understanding of various phenomena. Examples: Represent each function for the following scenarios. 1. Give a function C that can represent the cost of buying x meals, if one meal cost ₱ 40. Solution :Since each meal costs ₱ 40., then the function is C (x) = 40x 2. As an English tutor, the rate per hour is at ₱50.Represent the salary using the function S (h) where h is the number of hours worked. Solution : S(h) =50h

In Bacolod City, the average per hour rate that an internet café charges is at ₱20/hour. Determine the function C for the cost of consuming x number of hours. How much will a student pay if he used 2.5 hours to accomplish his school project? Solution: The Cost function for this scenario is C(x) = 20x. By substitution, C(2.5) = (20)(2.5) = ₱50 . Thus, the student must pay ₱50 for the 2.5 hours of internet consumption. Note that C(x) is read as C of x.

There are functions that requires more than one formula in order to obtain the given output. There are instances when we need to describe situations in which a rule or relationship changes as the input value crosses certain boundaries. In this case, we need to apply the piecewise function .

Santos family allocates ₱2,000 as food budget for each member of their family in a month. Express the total monthly food budget using the function B(n) where n is the number of family members 2. A chat agent working in a call center can encode 1,000 words in every hour. Write the total words W as a function of the x number of hours rendered by the said agent. QUIZ # 2

Direction: Fill in the missing terms to show the piecewise function of the problem.
