Year 3 Maths lesson: Measurement

Slide Content

Hello year 3 students! I’m Dusty the pirate.

You may notice that all of your 1 metre rulers are missing. That’s because I stole them!

My crew and I needed them for our flag poles. There’s only one way you can get them back.

Your classroom only had 3 rulers. We wanted our flag poles to be 1 metre long.

We need one for each crew member, which is the same number of students in your class.

If you can MAKE some flag poles for us that are 1 metre long, we will gladly return your rulers back.

My crew have left you with newspaper and butchers paper. You will choose one of these to turn into the poles.

I know what you are all thinking, “But if we don’t have a 1 metre ruler, then how will we be able to make them”.

You will have to ESTIMATE.

What do you already know is close to 1 metre? Is there something you know the length of that you can use to help you?

Discuss with your class before you start making the flag poles.

If you need extra help, than there’s a flag pole that is in the classroom that is exactly 1 metre. Your teacher knows where it is.

You can stand next to it or hold it up against the wall so you can understand how long it is.

But you can not use it to make your own flag pole. You’ll understand why soon.

You may also be asking, “How can we check our estimates are accurate?”.

Once everyone has made their estimates, your teacher can check how accurate you were using the example flag pole.

If your flag pole is too long or short in length, than you can adjust it.

You will only get to check TWO times, or the flag pole will BREAK. It is fragile, so make sure you estimate correctly.

When you are done, record how you estimated 1 metre.

What did you use? How did you do it? Did you make the item too short or long? By how much?

When you’re happy with the length of the flag pole, you can design your own flag to attach to it.

I will collect the flag poles and will bring back your rulers after your lesson.

Good luck.
