Plant and Animal Adaptations
Objectives
Standard 3
General Science

Adaptation
An adaptation is a body part or behaviour that
helps an animal survive in a particular
environment.

Adaptation
This can help an animal breathe, catch food,
or hide from predators.

There are (4) of the major adaptations that
animals possess are:
•Camouflage
•Mimicry
•Chemical Defence
•Body Coverings and Parts

Camouflage

Camouflage is the use of colour to blend into
its surroundings.

Camouflage
Here are some examples:

Mimicry
Mimicry is copying the behaviour or appearance
of another living organism to fool predators into
thinking it is poisonous or dangerous.

Chemical Defence
Some animals have chemicals in their bodies
that are used as defense mechanisms if they
feel threatened.

The bite of the Komodo
dragon has long been
known to cause rapid
swelling, disruption of
blood clotting and
shooting pain in the
vicinity of the bite.

Body Coverings and Parts
This help the animal adapt to its environment so
that it will be able to survive.
Body coverings include: feathers, skin, fur
and hard shells.

Body Coverings and Parts
Body parts include: eyes, ears, bent hind
legs, wings and claws.
Plants also have adaptations that help them
live and grow in different areas.
They possess adaptations to get food, water
and nutrients, for reproduction and also for
defense.

•Spines and thons protect plants from
predators.
