Safety in the Laboratory Presented by: Idumwonyi Promise Osaze

Introduction Laboratory safety involves all the measures taken by the laboratory worker, laboratory owner, institution and regulatory agencies to eliminate potential harm to human health and well-being. Although steps are taken to reduce risks in the workplace, safety is a matter of personal responsibility

LABORATORY GUIDELINES The laboratory guidelines is classified into different aspects. During the course of this presentation, we shall be looking at; General Rules Personal protection Handling chemicals Handling equipment

Laboratory Safety Guidelines General Rules No guests are allowed in the lab, including children or minors. Know emergency procedures, use and location of emergency equipment (emergency exits, fire extinguishers, fire blanket, eye wash station, first aid kit, and broken glass container). Report all accidents, no matter how insignificant they appear, to a laboratory supervisor

Personal Protection Do not smoke, eat, drink, chew gum, or apply cosmetics in a laboratory. Wear protective clothing such as long pants, closed-toe shoes, a lab coat, and goggles. Tie long hair up or behind the shoulders. Do not wear long, dangling jewelry or scarfs. Wash your hands regularly, with soap and water, especially after working with bacteria.

Handling Chemicals Keep all containers capped with the appropriate lid. Clearly label items produced in the lab. If a chemical is splashed into the eyes or skin, flush for 15 minutes. Read labels carefully. Be aware of hazardous chemicals and precautions for safe use. Follow instructions about proper disposal of lab reagents.

Handling Equipment Keep your work area clean and clutter-free. Be aware of your potential impact on others. Notify lab supervisor of malfunctioning equipment. If you do not know how to use an instrument or equipment, then do not touch it. Keep balances clean and dry, always use weigh paper/boats.

Make sure you know - where is the next: • telephone (and what are the emergency numbers!) • safety door • fire extinguisher and fire blanket • sandbox (to extinguish burning metals) • first aid box • person to ask/alert in case of problems • safety shower, eye washing station, safety instruction poster etc

Slide 9 is a pictorial illustration of safety and danger/hazard in the laboratory

Before you leave the lab; switch off • the ventilation in hoods that are not used • all apparatus (rotavaps, heaters, stirrers) • all lights close • the solvent cabinets • all windows etc Put away and store • chemicals • solvent cans

Recommendations Do not obstruct walkways and safety exits - work in a stable position Do not run in the lab Use clean and functional lab material Wash your hands before and after manipulations Label all recipients clearly and readably Run and clean the eye showers every month. Do not keep food in lab fridges containing chemicals
